Our Waste Services Team delivers one of the most essential services our residents rely on every single day — ensuring that household waste is collected, treated, recycled and disposed of safely and efficiently.

We provide domestic, recycling and garden waste collections to more than 126,000 households across the city, completing over 9 million collections each year. Collecting more than 100,000 tonnes of waste annually, the team is committed to delivering high-quality, safe and customer-focused services.

This includes behaviour-changing campaigns, education and engagement work to help improve sustainability, reduce contamination and enhance the overall efficiency of our waste services

    What is the job role?

Coventry City Council are looking for proactive and motivated Supervising Team Leaders to join our Street Pride and Fleet Management service.

This is a key operational role where you will lead and supervise frontline teams to deliver high-quality waste and environmental services across the city. Working closely with the Waste & Recycling Manager, you will be responsible for ensuring services are delivered safely, efficiently, and in line with customer expectations and service standards.

You will oversee the day-to-day deployment of staff, vehicles, and resources, ensuring operational priorities are met and that services are completed on time and within budget. The role also involves monitoring performance, maintaining high standards of health and safety, supporting employee development, and managing attendance, wellbeing, and conduct matters.

As a leader within the service, you will help drive continuous improvement, promote a customer-focused culture, and play an active role in service planning and innovation. You will also deputise for the Operational Manager when required.

The role is based at Whitley Depot, although you may be required to work from other locations across the city. You will be expected to participate in a rota covering 1 in 7 Saturdays and be willing to obtain an HGV Class 2 licence within 12 months if not already held.

All candidates must have the Right to Work in the UK. We are currently not offering sponsorship for this role.

    Who are we looking for?

We are looking for confident and capable leaders with experience of supervising operational teams in a fast-paced environment.

You will have excellent organisational and communication skills, with the ability to motivate, support and develop staff while maintaining high standards of performance and customer service. You'll be comfortable managing competing priorities, solving problems, and making decisions that ensure services continue to run effectively.

    You should have:

    • Experience of supervising teams, including planning and organising workloads.
    • Experience of working in a customer-focused operational service environment.
    • Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
    • The ability to monitor performance, manage resources and meet operational targets.
    • Experience of dealing with employee matters such as attendance, performance, and conduct issues.
    • Good ICT skills and experience using Microsoft Office and other operational systems.
    • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and a commitment to maintaining a safe working environment.
    • An understanding of effective people management practices, including recruitment, training and development.
    • A full current driving licence.

Ideally, you will have formal supervisory training or relevant qualifications and experience within waste management, environmental services, fleet operations, or a similar frontline service environment.

Most importantly, you will be a positive, resilient and adaptable individual who leads by example, takes pride in delivering excellent public services, and is committed to making a difference for the residents of Coventry.
