Job Description

INTRODUCTION: THE ENGLISH AS AN ADDITIONAL LANGUAGE SERVICE AND ITS AIMS Moray English as an Additional Language Service (EAL) is provided by Moray Council Education Authority for the support of bilingual children[1] and young people in Moray schools. Increasingly, this support is directed towards building the capacity of schools to support these children as well as working with the children themselves. The EAL Service is peripatetic, and teachers support Nursery, Primary, Secondary and Special schools in a given area. Teachers’ timetables and priorities are set within the terms set out in departmental guidelines and in accordance with the ethos of the Service. “Bilingual” here refers to children who normally use more than one language in the course of their daily lives. Many of these children need additional support to learn English as an additional language (EAL) in order to access the curriculum and raise their attainment. Support for these bilingual children should not be offered in isolation, and the English as An additional Language Teacher must cooperate with others to ensure continuity of support. In general, the pupil is supported most effectively when this cooperation extends across the curriculum and involves the whole school. However, in practice, the support that can be given may be more limited: subject to the availability of resources and the priority of the pupil; it may range from long-term whole-school support to occasional monitoring. The main aims of the English as an Additional Language Service are: 1. To build the capacity of schools to support bilingual children and young people. 2. In cooperation with schools, teachers and parents to create an Educational environment in which bilingual children are effectively assisted to raise their attainment and achievement. 3. To advise how the curriculum may be made accessible for bilingual children in terms of language, culture and concepts. 4. To support education for race equality (ERE) and enrolment process. [1] In this document, “children” generally refers to bilingual learners between the ages of 3 and 18..
