The Opportunity:

British Transport Police have an exciting opportunity for a Technical Surveillance Officer to join the Technical Surveillance unit. As a Technical Surveillance Officer with BTP, you will provide specialist technical support to covert policing operations, helping to prevent and detect serious crime across the rail network.

The role involves conducting site surveys, designing engineering solutions, and installing and maintaining specialist surveillance equipment in support of operational policing activity. You will work closely with operational officers and partner teams to deliver high‑quality technical capability in complex and sensitive environments, ensuring all activities are carried out lawfully, safely, and to a high professional standard.

What you'll be doing:

  • Conduct covert site surveys and feasibility assessments.
  • Install, operate and maintain covert audio, video and electronic surveillance equipment.
  • Provide technical advice to investigators and senior officers.
  • Ensure compliance with APP, RIPA/IPA and national technical standards.
  • Maintain accurate operational records and prepare evidential material for court.
  • Contribute to technical innovation and mentoring of staff.

What you'll bring to the team:

  • Full UK manual driving license (essential).
  • Strong electronics, IT, RF and networking skills.
  • Ability to design, modify and deploy covert surveillance systems.
  • High integrity, discretion and operational awareness.

Additional Information:

This is a demanding role with requirements to work flexible hours, evenings and weekends, on occasions at short notice during unsocial hours and in challenging circumstances including inclement weather.

The post holder is required to undergo many training courses to ensure their competence within the role.

The remit is a national one. The post holder will be expected to travel extensively with a purpose built TSU vehicle and will have associated overnight stays away from home
