Job summary
Dstl is seeking an exceptional Principal Toxicologist/Pharmacologist to lead cutting‑edge in vivo research that safeguards the UK from chemical and biological hazards. This is a rare opportunity to work at the forefront of national defence science, tackling challenges that cannot be addressed anywhere else in the UK.
You will lead a team of highly skilled in vivo scientists conducting research involving some of the most hazardous materials, including nerve agents, toxins, and other defence‑relevant threats. Your expertise will directly inform government policy, shape strategic decisions, and drive the development of life‑saving medical countermeasures.

What you’ll do
In this influential senior role, you will:
- Lead complex and sensitive in vivo pharmacology and toxicology studies, acting as a PI/Study Director.
- Hold (or have held) a Home Office Personal and/or Project Licence under ASPA (1986).
- Drive a team of in vivo specialists to deliver high‑impact research for UK Defence and Security.
- Design and execute studies using in vivo, ex vivo, and behavioural techniques, ensuring the highest scientific and ethical standards.
- Champion and embed the 3Rs principles across all research activities.
- Provide authoritative scientific leadership, shaping the strategic direction of Dstl’s toxicology and pharmacology capability.
- Introduce innovative methodologies and technologies to strengthen research outputs.
Person specification
We are looking for someone who has:
Qualifications
- BSc (Hons) in Pharmacology or a related Life Science (e.g., Toxicology, Neuroscience, Biochemistry, Biomedical Sciences).
- Current or previous Home Office Personal and/or Project Licence under ASPA (1986). (Training will be provided to recertify under the Dstl Establishment Licence.)
Technical Skills
- Advanced proficiency in behavioural monitoring techniques across multiple species.
- Advanced understanding of ex vivo electrophysiology.
- Proven leadership of multidisciplinary teams delivering in vivo research.
- Demonstrable application of the 3Rs in research design and execution.
- Evidence of initiating new collaborations across academia, industry, or international partners.
- Recognised ability to mentor and develop senior scientific staff.
- Strong track record of hands‑on technical problem‑solving.
- Consistent delivery of sound, evidence‑based decisions.
- Excellent time and priority management.
Experience
- Extensive experience in research environments conducting in vivo or ex vivo studies.
- Experience as a Home Office Project Licence holder and/or Personal Licensee under ASPA (1986).
- Proven ability to build and lead multidisciplinary collaborative networks.
