Job Summary
You and your team of traders will be hedging ~£1.5bn/annum power and gas commodity exposure for our Central Government and Wider Public Sector customers. Keeping energy costs down for our customers frees up money to be used to deliver vital services to the public. You will be part of a team who is helping our customers transition to net zero and help achieve the UK’s climate ambitions.
Directorate Overview
Commercial is the largest directorate in CCS and is responsible for the design, development, implementation and management of our commercial agreements, which are used by our customers across the public sector. We have delivered value to the public sector and helped our customers spend more than £34 billion through the agreements we create and enjoy more than £3.5 billion in commercial benefits annually through our agreements.
Category management sits at the heart of CCS. We use our in-depth knowledge and expertise of public sector suppliers, to create market and category strategies. These strategies are used within CCS to create market leading commercial agreements that help shape how common goods and services are bought across the public sector. Our skills are also used in carrying out commercial policy, development of new products and services and supplier relationship management.
Team Summary
The 8-person Trading team sits within the wider Energy team. Trading manages market exposure in line with agreed strategies. Trading is conducted for both aggregated portfolios and for individual organisations with considerable volume and bespoke needs. Trading also performs back-office functions to support trading activities.
Job description
Key Accountabilities:
Lead and coach team members, manage performance to ensure a high-performing team, and support staff development through regular feedback
Contribute to the ongoing development of the energy category and category strategies as a proactive leader within the energy senior management team
Provide expert challenge and advice to Senior Traders and Risk team in management of CCS portfolio ensuring hedging in accordance with relevant risk strategies and controls
Oversee and be responsible for the team’s delivery of all back office processes and report writing
Lead on new product development for Trading products including integration of Power Purchase Agreements to hedging approach
Be the go to expert for UK power and gas markets and related market drivers
Be the go to expert on energy industry policy impacting CCS Trading and inputting on related energy industry policy engagement
Contribute to the wider team understanding of market fundamentals and technical analysis and execute forward hedging strategies
Lead on annual performance report reviewing team performance
Lead on internal and external engagement with customers and suppliers including governance boards, customer and supplier events
Person specification
Essential Criteria (to be assessed at application stage):
Energy trading experience
Demonstrable understanding of the workings of European gas, power, carbon commodity markets and experience of modelling commodity markets/drivers.
Proven understanding of energy policy and wholesale markets
Proven ability to lead, motivate and develop individuals or teams
Desirable criteria:
Experience of successfully transferring specialist knowledge to team members and customer groups
In the event of a high number of applications, the desirable criteria will be used as a second sift.

CCS is a flexible business with a smarter working model where our colleagues benefit from a mix of home and office working. Successful candidates are expected to work from one of the office locations listed. Our current office attendance approach requires a minimum of 26 days per quarter (approx 2 days per week, which may be subject to change) in CCS office locations or off site meetings with suppliers, customers, partners, networking / industry events. This is pro rata for those who work part time. Our smarter working principles mean that our people have the advantage of both office and offsite based collaboration and learning, as well as working from home.
