About the unit
Leicestershire Police’s Armed Response Unit provides the central armed response for Leicestershire, Leicester, and Rutland, offering specialised capabilities such as Tactical Rifle, Close Protection, and Mobile Armed Support to Surveillance.
- Facilities: Our base near J21 of the M1 includes a newly refurbished firearms building with a canteen and changing facilities, and an on-site shooting range for training.
- Team: A professional, highly trained, and motivated group with access to the latest equipment and exceptional trainers.
- Shift Pattern: Currently four-on, four-off 12-hour shifts.
The mush haves
- Substantive Constables from Home Office forces, PSNI, or Police Scotland.
- Medically and physically fit to national standards.
- Competent ARVOs trained to a minimum ARVO standard, as detailed in the National Police Firearms Training Curriculum (NPFTC).
- Able to pass the JRFT to level 9.4.
- Current police advanced drivers with IPP or standard response drivers with IPP, willing to complete an advanced driving course.
- Have no outstanding discipline or integrity issues.
- Able to undertake all duties outlined in the National ARVO role profile.
- Able to produce a training record endorsed by their Chief Firearms Instructor.
The Recruitment Process

- Interview: Conducted by a panel of two senior officers, assessing you against the personal qualities required for an ARVO, your commitment to Leicestershire Police, and the challenges we face as a county.
- Firearms Assessment
- Pre-Employment Checks: Successful applicants will undergo pre-employment checks, including a medical, JRFT (Level 9.4), and Employment Vetting to MV and SC level. We will also request your force file and reference from your current force.
Additional Information
For part time hours the salary will be calculated on a pro-rata basis, this is based on the number of hours for the vacancy.
