Transport Supervisor
At Bath & North East Somerset Council we have one overriding purpose – to improve people’s lives.
About the Team
At Bath & North East Somerset Council, our purpose is simple: to improve people’s lives. In Passenger Transport, that purpose is delivered through safe, reliable and well-run transport services for residents who depend on us every day.
We are looking for a Transport Supervisor to help lead the day-to-day operation of our in-house transport service. This is a practical, visible supervisory role, supporting drivers and operational colleagues, helping services run to schedule, responding to issues as they arise and maintaining the standards expected of a council service working with passengers, families, schools, care services and other partners.
The role will suit someone who is calm under pressure, confident supervising operational staff, comfortable making sensible day-to-day decisions, and committed to safety, safeguarding, customer service and inclusive team working.
About the Role
Working under the direction of the Transport Team Leader, you will help plan, allocate and co-ordinate transport activities so that the right resources are in place to meet service requirements.
Supervise and monitor the work of the operational team so that services are delivered safely, efficiently and in line with agreed procedures.
Allocate work to drivers and support the daily running of transport services, including responding to operational issues, breakdowns, incidents and changes in demand.
Support colleagues to meet expected service and conduct standards, including contributing to induction, training and day-to-day performance support.
Act as a point of contact for enquiries, service issues and complaints, providing clear information and escalating more complex matters when needed.
Carry out driving duties as required, typically including morning and afternoon school runs.
Take service bookings, including Dial-a-Ride bookings, from passengers and other services.
Maintain routine records, collate service information and contribute to standardised reports on activity and performance.
Work with internal and external colleagues to maintain effective relationships and support good service delivery.
About You
You will bring a practical, professional approach to supervising an operational transport team. You will understand the importance of safe passenger transport, good communication, reliable records and supportive day-to-day leadership.
A category D driving licence and PCV Certificate of Professional Competence.
A professional qualification or GCSEs/equivalent and/or relevant experience working in a supervisory role in an operational service.
Experience supervising operational teams, ideally in a transport setting, with the ability to manage staff appropriately and fairly.
Knowledge of transport legislation, or the ability to gain that knowledge quickly.
An understanding of special needs in a passenger transport environment, or the ability to gain that knowledge, alongside awareness of disability issues in service delivery.
Knowledge of health and safety and safeguarding principles, procedures and legal requirements relevant to operational services.
Effective written and verbal communication skills, including when dealing with enquiries, complaints or operational partners.
ICT skills for day-to-day office work, including email, documents and spreadsheets.
The ability to work flexibly, under pressure and to tight deadlines, applying judgement to ensure service objectives are met.
A respectful, inclusive and professional approach that helps build a supportive team culture.
We know that the best services are delivered by people who feel supported, trusted and valued.
We are committed to creating a workplace where people can thrive, develop their careers and make a meaningful difference.
In return, you'll find:
• A leadership role with genuine strategic influence.
• The opportunity to shape services that directly improve residents' lives.
• A supportive and collaborative leadership environment.
• Flexible and agile working arrangements.
• Opportunities for professional development and growth.
• A strong commitment to wellbeing, inclusion and work-life balance.
• A culture that encourages innovation, continuous improvement and new ideas.
Most importantly, you'll join an organisation where leadership is measured not just by what we deliver, but by how we support our people and communities to succeed.
