Job summary

You will be part of the Trees Research, Evidence and Analysis Team within the Biodiversity, Land Use and Investment Directorate.

This is a multidisciplinary, G6 led team comprising of natural scientists, economists and social scientists. We support the trees and forestry policy team which is responsible for delivery of trees and forestry policy including the governments legally binding targets under the Environment Act.

Our team leads on championing and embedding science and analysis into the Trees and Forestry team to ensure that both policy and delivery are based on evidence. We are responsible for managing research projects, translating evidence into policy and managing our expert, independent advisors the Trees and Woodlands Science Advisory Group. We are seeking a Senior Scientific Officer to join our team who has relevant experience in forestry science, ecology or closely related relevant disciplines. The successful candidate will need to use technical knowledge and expertise to generate high quality evidence to support policy making.

Trees Research, Evidence and Analysis Team

This role will support policy and delivery colleagues in the Trees and Forestry Team by ensuring their work is underpinned by robust evidence. The postholder will identify evidence needs and apply technical expertise to develop, manage, and deliver scientific research and evidence that informs policy.

The role requires strong coordination and collaboration across organisational boundaries to align outputs with evidence standards, policy objectives, and statutory requirements. Working at the science–policy interface, you will collaborate with policy and evidence teams across Defra, its arm’s-length bodies, and the wider research community, translating complex environmental data into clear, accessible insights to support decision-making.

You will also have opportunities to take a leading role in commissioning, organising, and delivering R&D projects as part of the wider evidence programme.

Candidates will join the Directorates’ Science Professional Community that provides a peer group for professional learning, development, and support.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide timely, high-quality evidence and scientific advice to support policy development on woodland and tree biodiversity and forest management, resilience and timber.
  • Design, procure and oversee research to address evidence gaps. Act as the main point of contact for researchers and funders, ensuring research is well coordinated, commissioned appropriately, and delivered to time and budget.
  • Lead and manage multiple research and development projects at pace, ensuring outputs are robust, relevant and embedded in wider policy thinking.
  • Communicate and influence across Defra, OGDs, UKRI and the wider scientific community to ensure a joined-up approach to public research.
  • Build strong relationships with policy, delivery and analytical colleagues.
  • Clearly communicate complex scientific evidence to a range of audiences.
  • Provide expert input into official correspondence, briefings and ministerial submissions.

Essential Criteria

  • A scientific understanding of tree and/or forestry science and a good general awareness of policy issues impacting treescape expansion and management.
  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to make effective decisions and deliver quality policy relevant analysis under time pressure, including where evidence is limited.
  • Experience designing and/or managing research and development projects.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including drafting high-quality technical reports and providing clear advice to non-specialist audiences.
  • Good project management skills and the ability to plan, prioritise and deliver work across a varied portfolio of research projects, monitoring budgets and delivery of research outputs.
  • Demonstrated ability to work across multiple teams and organisations, bringing together a wide range of perspectives.
  • Knowledge of tree and or forestry science or related discipline.

Qualifications

A postgraduate degree in a relevant science area, or Bachelors with minimum 3 years in a relevant role.

Location

As part of the pre-employment process for this post, successful candidate(s) will be able to agree a contractual workplace from those locations listed in this advert. The agreed contractual workplace is then the substantive and permanent place of work for the successful candidate(s)

Where the location is ‘National’ the successful appointee should discuss and agree an appropriate contractual location in line with both Defra’s location policy and site capacity, prior to proceeding with pre-employment processes.

The agreed amount of time spent at a workplace for this post will reflect the requirement for Civil Servants to spend at least 60% of their working time in an organisation workplace with the option to work the remaining time flexibly from home. Salary

New entrants to the Civil Service are expected to start on the minimum of the pay band. The internal roles rules apply to existing Civil Servants, i.e. level transfers move on current salary or the pay range minimum, transfers on promotion move to new pay range minimum or receive 10% increase. Either case is determined by whichever is the highest.
