Help young people reconnect with learning

Fable House is an independent specialist education provider for young people whose needs have not been successfully met within mainstream or traditional specialist settings.

Our students are capable, creative and curious, but many have experienced disrupted education or extended periods away from learning. They may have autism, ADHD, PDA profiles, trauma-related needs, SEMH needs or specific learning differences. We create the conditions in which they can feel safe, rebuild trust in education and recognise their own potential.

We are looking for a flexible, creative and trauma informed Tutor to work primarily within our Alternative Provision. Depending on the needs of the timetable, the successful candidate may also support teaching and learning within our full-time school provision.

This is a varied role that may involve working with students across our age and ability range. Learning is delivered predominantly one-to-one and in very small groups, with small-group and classroom-based delivery used wherever it is appropriate for the students involved.

Our curriculum is different from a conventional school curriculum. Learning is highly personalised, interest-led and project based. Students develop knowledge and skills through meaningful projects, practical experiences, sustained enquiry and purposeful outcomes. Alongside English and Maths, our curriculum includes Science, computing, creative subjects, conservation, cooking, physical and mental wellbeing, vocational learning and preparation for adulthood.

As a Tutor, you will work within our established curriculum pathways and schemes of work. With support and direction from class teachers and curriculum leads, you will plan and deliver sessions, adapt activities to meet individual needs, gather evidence of learning and contribute to the assessment of student progress. You do not need to be a qualified teacher. We are looking for someone who can build genuine, trusting relationships while maintaining clear professional boundaries; someone who can notice what a student needs, think creatively and adapt without losing sight of the intended learning.

We are particularly interested in candidates who: Understand SEND and the barriers faced by young people who have experienced disrupted education. Can plan and deliver engaging learning within an agreed curriculum. Are confident supporting a range of subjects, projects and practical activities. Can work effectively one-to-one, with very small groups and within a classroom team. Can adapt communication, resources and expectations without reducing ambition. Are calm, patient and able to respond thoughtfully to changes in a student’s capacity. Value student voice, curiosity, creativity and independence. Understand that behaviour communicates a need. Are willing to learn, reflect and contribute as part of a collaborative team.

At Fable House, we believe that: everyone has the potential to learn and achieve; all behaviour communicates a need; each new day is a fresh start; we all do our best within our capacity at the time; and everyone has skills they can develop and share.

If you want to help young people experience education differently, we would love to hear from you. Fable House is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. The successful applicant will be subject to safer recruitment checks, including an enhanced DBS check and appropriate employment, qualification, medical fitness and identity checks.

How to apply: please email office@fablehouse.org to request an application form. If you wish to discuss the role before applying please email to arrange a phone call.
