About the role

The Brighton & Hove AMHP service is a standalone team with an office base at Mill View Hospital. We're a close knit team who provide a robust, professional and high-quality 24-hour service to meet the Council’s statutory duties.

Your prospective colleagues will tell you what a huge difference it makes working in a small geographical area where you can travel from one end of your patch to the other in under 30 minutes.

They'll also tell you how they've adopted flexible working patterns and hybrid working that has transformed their work/life balance.

We're a forward-thinking team. We were the very first AMHP Team in the country to use a smartphone app to complete statutory MHA forms. We use the same app to approve s12 doctor's claims.

We're client focussed and share a strong human rights ethic, where team members feel supported to offer a differing view.

Whilst the systems that we work within continue to pose challenges to our practice, AMHP's who have joined from other local authorities comment on how the following make Brighton & Hove the best Local Authority to work for as an AMHP:

  • Quick Police responses to s135(1) requests
  • A selection of bookable transport options for conveyance with clear delegation arrangements
  • Clear protocols with our Trust colleagues to ensure that clients and their carers receive NHS support whilst they await an inpatient bed.
  • Strong partnership working and an emphasis on preventative work.

The successful applicants will have access to high quality training, individual and reflective group supervision and participate in regular team away days. We also have strong links with the University of Brighton who provide regular teaching opportunities for those interested.

You can find more information about living and working in Brighton here.

What we expect of the successful applicants:

You will be working within a 24-hour dedicated AMHP Service on a shift pattern undertaking emergency and planned Mental Health Act assessments on behalf of Brighton and Hove City Council, which includes working weekends and out of office hours and being on standby overnight.  The post holder will be an autonomous professional working on behalf of the local authority, and will need to be available to travel within the city during their working hours.

You will be able to screen, triage, undertake, and co-ordinate assessments, often in complex, crisis situations with high levels of risk, under the Mental Health Act, as an Approved Mental Health Professional. To make arrangements for informal admission and applications for compulsory admission and guardianship, in accordance with the outcome of the assessment. To appraise, and decline or approve Community Treatment Order applications and renewals. To ensure the 'least restrictive' options have been exhausted using Crisis Resolution and Home Treatment Team input or referring and signposting to other appropriate services.

You will work collaboratively and communicate effectively with service users, nearest relatives, carers, other professionals, agencies, organisations and volunteers to ensure that community resources and support are available to service users and their carers to assist them to manage their mental health disorders and to minimise risk. At times sharing your specialist knowledge and offering support and advice to other professionals and other organisations.

Where it is considered the criteria may be met, you will make applications to the Magistrates Court for warrants to enter, search for, and remove individuals from private dwellings to a place of safety, and will make necessary arrangements for the execution of such warrants. The list of duties in the job description should not be regarded as exclusive or exhaustive.  There will be other duties and requirements associated with your job and, in addition, as a term of your employment you may be required to undertake various other duties as may reasonably be required.

Your duties will be as set out in the above job description but please note that the Council reserves the right to update your job description, from time to time, to reflect changes in, or to, your job.

You will be consulted about any proposed changes.
