Folkestone & Hythe is a dynamic and innovative place to live, work and visit.

Recognised by Best Companies as an outstanding organisation to work for, we have a real focus on health & wellbeing and staff development, and an excellent benefits package that includes corporate membership, discount and salary sacrifice schemes, up to 31 days holiday and Christmas closure, access to the Local Government Pension Scheme, and much, much more.

Our offices are based in the heart of Folkestone, with easy access to transport links, local shops, entertainment facilities and the seafront. In addition, we have an agile working culture that supports and encourages flexible and remote/home working.

About you

We currently have an exciting opportunity for three passionate, motivated and enthusiastic individuals to join our Enforcement Team.

The post holders will represent the Council, ensuring that public areas are kept safe, clean, and tidy, whilst responding to urgent requests and undertaking appropriate actions to resolve any issues. The individuals should be able to read and understand relevant legislation, remain calm and composed under pressure and be able to respond professionally in potential emotional and challenging situations. A large part of this role is community engagement, educational events, encouragement and enforcement.

Two of the Officers will primarily focus on enforcement of the District’s main Green Flag Parks (i.e. Coastal Park, Kingsnorth Gardens) during the summer season and wider district patrolling during autumn/winter of other public open spaces like cemeteries, childrens play areas, and beaches.

Ideally, the post holders will benefit from having enforcement experience or have a background in security, or negotiation skills.

You will support in improving the district and assist in the effective delivery of the environmental patrol function, this includes (Dog fouling, littering, fly-tipping, unauthorised encampments, fly-posting, waste out early, community protection, issue Fixed Penalty Notices (FPN) etc) in accordance with all relevant statutes, guidance, policies and procedures. You will also be expected to prepare Legal case files and attend court where applicable.

The successful candidates will be required to patrol the district by foot for periods of time as well as travelling throughout the district by van. You will need to be able to:

  • Handle difficult confrontational situations
  • Keep calm under pressure
  • Multitask
  • Have excellent communication skills
  • Have the ability to work at pace as part of a team or by yourself
  • A keen eye for detail

Above all else, you will be joining a very successful, supportive and passionate team. So, if you have a genuine interest within Environmental Enforcement and you are excited about the opportunity to get out in the district and make a difference, whilst enjoying a challenge and be motivated by results, then we want to hear from you.

The 37 hours will be worked on a shift basis between 07.00 hours and 19.00 hours, 7 days per week. However, most of the work will be from 8.30am and 5pm Monday to Friday. Work outside these hours may be required from time to time for targeted operations, including seasonal patrols across the district during weekend and bank holidays.

Whilst we have a hybrid working approach, as an Environmental Enforcement Officer you will be providing a frontline service, with an expectation that you will work from the Civic Centre in Folkestone throughout the week, with the occasional opportunity to work from home.

For an informal discussion please contact Daniel Stone (Senior Environmental Protection Officer) on 01303 853530 or Daniel.stone@folkestone-hythe.gov.uk or Shaun Staveley (Environmental Crime Officer) on 01303 853212 or shaun.staveley@folkestone-hythe.gov.uk

The closing date for receipt of all completed application forms is 12pm on Thursday 15 May 2025.

Interviews will be held on Thursday 22 May 2025.
