Graduate Trainee Democratic and Electoral Services Officer

Position: Graduate Trainee Democratic and Electoral Services Officer 
Location: Milton Park, Oxfordshire 
Job Type: Full Time, Permanent 
Hours: 37 hours per week 
Salary: £20,578 per annum, Grade 3

About the role:

Working as a key member of both the democratic and electoral service teams for two councils in the heart of Oxfordshire, your working day will be varied and fascinating. From attending and clerking council committee meetings, and witnessing first-hand the democracy underpinning local government, to being fully involved in the delivery of a wide variety of elections and referendums. 
It offers an exciting opportunity to undertake a wide variety of training and development opportunities, including relevant qualifications. The post holder will have the opportunity to engage with council-wide projects as well as those in the Legal and Democratic service area. You will have the opportunity to progress and will be supported fully to develop your skills and abilities in your two-year programme. Previous postholders have successfully gained an officer post within the councils prior to the completion of the two-year training programme. 
This is a Politically Restricted Post under the Local Government and Housing Act 1989 (as amended). 
About you: 
- Educated to graduate level or equivalent 
- Excellent interpersonal and oral and written communication skills 
- Ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines 
- Keen to work to quality standards and to achieve team performance targets 
- An interest in a career in democratic and / or electoral services 
- Ability to work accurately and with strong attention to detail 
- Ability to understand, apply and work in accordance with legislation 
- Ability to work in a confidential and political environment 
- Good IT skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and software applications 
- Ability and willingness to attend evening meetings regularly and to work long hours, evenings and weekends at election times 
- Ability to attend daytime and evening meetings in Milton Park, Abingdon, Didcot, Wantage, Crowmarsh Gifford and other places in South and Vale, sometimes at short notice 
- Willingness and aptitude to undertake relevant professional training and personal development in democratic and / or electoral services. 
If you have the following experience or qualifications – it’s a bonus: 
- Experience in administration and experience of using a specialist IT system 
- An understanding of political decision-making in local government 
- Knowledge and understanding / experience of democratic services 
- Knowledge and understanding / experience of the electoral process 
- Full driving licence and use of a vehicle insured for business purposes 
You may have experience of the following: Electoral Services Officer, Administrator, Admin Assistant, Office Administrator, Office Assistant, Electoral Services, Electoral Officer, Electoral Services Administrator etc.
