The post holder will be part of a small team reporting to the Highway DLO Operations Supervisor. The purpose of the role is to provide a first class service to our customers, completing a high standard of maintenance to the highway network, helping to ensure that all maintenance activities are delivered in accordance with the strategies and policies of the Council.
To be the public face of Barnet Highways and highly visible to residents, road users and other customers on a day-to-day basis, which means appropriate levels of conduct, professionalism and courtesy are required at all times.
The main focus will be on footway repair/patching and improvement works, however the following works will also be undertaken:
Pothole repair and carriageway defect reinstatements.
Carriageway and footway patching, relay and construction.
Minor Drainage works, including resetting ironwork and gully/access chambers
Bollard resetting, removal and installation
Guard Rail resetting, removal and installation
Resetting, removal and installation of road signs
Making sites safe
Traffic Management operations
General other small Civil Engineering repairs
The post holder will at times be expected to carry out inspections of sites and make decisions on the type and extent of works required, taking account of Council process and procedures.
The post holder must be self-motivated and proactive in terms of delivering solutions and have good problem solving skills.
The post holder will be required to participate in out-of-hours winter maintenance and emergency response activities on a rota basis, which will sometimes involve working unsociable hours, weekends and public holidays.
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
Highways maintenance experience:
Demonstrate considerable experience of carry out the range of works identified above and in particular footway related works.
A current, valid driving licence is essential, with LGV Class 2 essential and HGV entitlement highly desirable.
Willing to work flexible hours and overtime when required.
A good understanding of health and safety and its impact on the workplace.
Proven track record of meeting deadlines and targets whilst working safely and productively with minimum supervision.
Good communication and interpersonal skills will be necessary to ensure that all matters are dealt with in a courteous and helpful manner and customers are made fully aware of the services and standards the Council is able to deliver.
Experience of working in the public eye or other customer-facing roles would be advantageous.
Ability to record and keep accurate records of works undertaken.
Demonstrable awareness of environmental aspects and impacts and waste management.
NVQ or City & Guilds training in the use of salt-spreading vehicles is desirable.
Relevant training including CPC, CSCS and New Roads and Streetworks qualifications.
Up to date record of training in other key aspects of the post, including use of plant, driving, health and safety etc
Experience in the use of handheld technology (Tablets, PDAs, Smartphones, etc.) would be advantageous, but not essential.
Local knowledge of the borough would be beneficial, but not essential.
To carry out any other reasonable duties that may be directed or implied from time to time commensurate to the post and/or organisational requirements.
