Due to one promotion and one paralegal leaving us to undertake the SQE, we have a gap in our team for a new paralegal.We don’t mind if you don’t have experience – enthusiasm to get stuck into this important support role is far more important.We are multi-disciplinary and undertake work from fly-tipping to multi-million pound regen projects, and everything in between. We are also on the Government Devolution Priority Programme for Local Government Reorganisation, so we have a very big piece of work to do so that we are ready to become part of a unitary council in 2028, with lots of different workstreams – from helping HR with employment law input, to reviewing all the contracts across the council. That means lots of development opportunities for someone keen to learn. We are a crucial support service for the whole council, so you must be able to get on with folks, want to understand their needs, and want to help the council fulfil its ambitions. Although this is a hybrid role, you must be able and willing to work in the office. Collaborating with colleagues across two councils, you will contribute to making a positive impact on the lives of residents in Guildford and Waverley. As a Lawyer, you will have the opportunity to work on a range of interesting, high profile and rewarding cases, with the potential to explore other areas of law depending on work demands.
We are seeking a candidate with knowledge and experience in either Civil and/or Criminal Litigation, along with a willingness to learn and develop expertise in Employment Law and Practice.
The successful candidate will support an experienced Senior Employment Lawyer by advising on employment matters as a secondary area of work. While prior experience in Employment Law is preferred, it is not essential—comprehensive support and training will be provided to the right candidate.
As with all roles within the Council’s Legal Service, the candidate will also be expected to develop a working knowledge of Local Government Law to advise on governance-related matters.
You may have already worked within the public sector, but we also encourage candidates from the private sector, including the Legal Aid sector, as we often have before in other areas of practice!

Key responsibilities:
