Are you a qualified solicitor with a passion for public service and a track record of strategic legal leadership within local government? Folkestone &amp; Hythe District Council is seeking a dynamic and experienced Head of Legal Services to lead our legal team and act as Solicitor to the Council.
About the Role
This is a pivotal leadership position, providing expert legal advice across the Council, managing a high-performing legal team, and supporting governance as Deputy Monitoring Officer. You’ll play a key role in shaping legal strategy, ensuring compliance, and supporting major projects and legislative changes.
Key Responsibilities
<ul>
<li>Lead and manage the Legal Services team, ensuring high-quality legal support across all service areas.</li>
<li>Provide strategic legal advice on complex issues including procurement, contracts, planning, and governance.</li>
<li>Act as training principal for legal apprentices and trainees.</li>
<li>Attend and advise at Council, Cabinet and Committees as required.</li>
<li>Instruct external legal specialists and manage substantial budgets.</li>
<li>Support the Monitoring Officer in upholding standards of conduct and lawfulness.</li>
<li>Drive service improvements and contribute to corporate goals.</li>
</ul>
What We’re Looking For
Essential Qualifications &amp; Experience:
<ul>
<li>Qualified Solicitor with 5+ years post-qualification experience.</li>
<li>Proven leadership in legal services, with expertise in at least three areas such as procurement, contracts, property, planning, or litigation.</li>
<li>Strong governance knowledge and ability to advise senior stakeholders.</li>
<li>Excellent communication, negotiation, and analytical skills.</li>
<li>Experience with legal software and systems (e.g., IKEN, Westlaw, Land Registry portal).</li>

Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council are seeking an experienced Contracts and Procurement Lawyer to join our legal services team.
You will be a qualified solicitor or barrister (or equivalent) with recent experience of working in the areas of contracts and procurement in a local government context.
Applicants will require excellent communications skills and be confident in providing practical legal advice and assistance on a wide range of contract and procurement matters, ensuring compliance with public procurement regulations.
You should be proficient in drafting, reviewing, and negotiating public contracts and have excellent understanding of the public procurement framework and local government law and a proven ability to manage a varied workload with minimal supervision
Reporting to the Head of Legal and Democratic Services, the successful candidate will have a broad portfolio of work including high value contract tenders and providing advice to all of the authority’s services.

An exciting opportunity has arisen to lead Tunbridge Wells Borough Council’s Corporate Governance team at a time of significant change in information management and local government. With the emergence of AI technology and the implications on privacy, the introduction of the new Data (Use and Access) Act 2025 and its impact on UK-GDPR, and Local Government Reorganisation, the team will be instrumental in supporting the Council in navigating these developments over the coming months and years.About the RoleYou will lead a high performing team that plays a key role in the Council’s corporate governance arrangements, helping the Council to protect the personal data it holds and making sure it meets its legal obligations.
