Neighbourhood Planning Officer
Fixed term for up to 2 years
37 hours per week [Part time/flexible working considered]
We live in a beautiful part of the world, with much of our landscape falling into an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It’s our ambition here at East Devon District Council to keep East Devon an outstanding place to live and work. Our appreciation for maintaining our nationally recognised high quality of life runs through the culture of our council and informs our objectives. As well as providing great services every day, we plan carefully for a sustainable future by delivering excellent opportunities and great local homes for people.
About the role
The promotion of the previous post-holder to work in the multi-authority team delivering the ‘Greater Exeter Strategic Plan’ has created this exciting and unusual opportunity to work with our local communities on the production of their Neighbourhood Plans. The post offers an opportunity to progress a career in planning and you will gain a broad overview of the whole planning process as well as detailed experience of policy production and delivery. We have very active and enthusiastic local communities and, with 40 Plans in production, are in the vanguard of Neighbourhood Plan delivery in England. This is a role which requires diplomacy, tact and a willingness to achieve a thorough understanding of a wide range of planning issues so that local groups are equipped to meet the challenges producing their Plans can bring. Reporting to the Planning Policy Manager you will provide support, guidance and information to communities producing plans as well as commenting on their proposals, ensuring correct processes are followed and grant aid is secured.
About the Team
We are a small, friendly team, led by an enthusiastic Manager, with a range of expertise and a willingness to share tasks and work collaboratively. We are always busy but the work is interesting and challenging. We pride ourselves on our supportive environment and have an excellent record of mentoring colleagues wishing to join the RTPI.
You may be a qualified planner, a student or recent graduate in a planning or similar subject or have an interest in planning; but most importantly you will want to handle a varied workload, have a positive and enthusiastic outlook and a desire to work with local communities. You will have excellent communication skills and pay attention to detail, but also have an ability to see ‘the bigger picture’. We would welcome applications from candidates wishing to work either full or part-time.
Closing date: 30th July 2017.
Interviews will be held w/c 10th August 2017.
East Devon District Council has decided to relocate away from its current headquarters in Sidmouth. Some staff will relocate to Exmouth during the latter part of 2017 and others to Honiton. The timescale for Honiton relocation has yet to be confirmed.
