Newham Young Carers Schools’ worker

£22,167 to £24,416 Pro-rata, inclusive of Outer London Weighting 21hrs per week; fixed term 12 month contract until 31st August 2018

Family Action’s Newham Young Carers’ Service is here to help and support Young Carers and their families. Using ‘Think Family’ principles we aim to ensure that young carers are not disadvantaged by their caring responsibilities and have the best opportunity of achieving their full potential. The role will be based in two pilot secondary schools in Newham and involves working in partnership with schools to raise awareness and identification of young carers in school. To support and train school staff in identifying a young carers lead, introducing a young carer’s policy and practice and developing mechanisms to identify and support young carers and reduce negative outcomes.

You will be responsible for establishing, developing and delivering this brand new pilot service in two secondary schools. You will deliver individual and small group work to students in schools as part of raising awareness and identification of young carers in schools. You will establish excellent working relationships with your designated pilot schools in order to facilitate successful interventions with young carers and their families. Working in partnership to embed good practice for young carers identification and support, including ensuring schools sign up to Young Carers Card scheme and School’s charter. You will be responsible for ensuring that the service is in line with Family Action safeguarding minimum standards and case manage any client safeguarding issues.

Preferably you will have a degree or equivalent qualification in relevant subject, such as: health, social care, education, psychology or psychotherapy. You will have Young Carers, Family support or children and young people related work experience and excellent practice skills in working with children and young people. An ability to plan and deliver support for children and young people that promotes their personal development, self-esteem, resilience and learning outcomes.
