About the Role
Tower Hamlets Council is seeking caring, reliable and dedicated Passenger Assistants to join our Transport Services Unit within the Communities Directorate. This is a rewarding opportunity to support children and adults with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) and other vulnerable residents, ensuring they travel safely, comfortably and with dignity to schools, day centres and other destinations.
Working as part of a professional transport team, you will play a vital role in safeguarding passengers throughout their journey and helping them access education, care and community services.
In this role, you will:
- Assist passengers between their home, vehicle and destination, providing safe and compassionate support at all times.
- Support passengers with mobility needs, wheelchairs, specialist seating and safety equipment.
- Operate tail lifts and other vehicle equipment following training to ensure the safe loading and unloading of passengers.
- Maintain passenger records and communicate effectively with parents, carers, schools, day centres and transport colleagues.
- Monitor and promote the wellbeing, dignity and safeguarding of all passengers in your care.
- Contribute to maintaining a clean, safe and welcoming vehicle environment.
About You
We are looking for individuals who can demonstrate:
- Experience of working with people in a caring, sympathetic and responsible manner.
Experience supporting children or adults with mobility, personal care or behavioural needs.
- Good verbal and written communication skills in English.
- The ability to build positive relationships with passengers, families, carers and partner organisations.
- A commitment to safeguarding, equality, inclusion and delivering excellent customer service.
- Flexibility, reliability and the ability to work effectively as part of a team.
A Passenger Assistant Training Scheme (PATS) certificate, Makaton or sign language skills would be advantageous, although full training will be provided

Additional Information
This is a permanent, term-time only position working 15 hours per week across 45.05 weeks per year. The post is subject to an Enhanced DBS check for work with children and adults. Successful candidates will be required to complete all mandatory and role-specific training and wear the Council's uniform.
