Job Introduction

Are you interested in helping to make public transport safer and more secure for everyone across the West Midlands?

This is an exciting opportunity to join Transport for West Midlands (TfWM) as a Safety, Security and Policing Support Apprentice, where you'll gain hands-on experience supporting the teams that help keep our transport network safe, secure and welcoming.

Working alongside experienced colleagues, you'll develop practical skills in business administration, asset management, operational support and performance reporting while studying towards a Level 3 Business Administrator Apprenticeship. You'll contribute to a range of important activities that support frontline safety operations, giving you valuable experience in a fast-paced public sector environment.

As part of the WMCA Apprentice Development Programme, you'll benefit from structured learning, professional mentoring and practical experience designed to help you build the skills and confidence for a successful career, whether within WMCA, the wider public sector or beyond.

Please don't be put off from applying if you won't receive your exam results until August 2026. We'd still love to hear from you.

Please note this is a 2-year fixed-term apprenticeship.

What you'll be doing.

As a Safety, Security and Policing Support Apprentice, you'll:

  • Support the day-to-day administration of the Safety, Security and Policing team.

  • Help manage operational equipment and assets, including radios, drones and body-worn cameras, ensuring accurate records are maintained.

  • Assist with monitoring and maintaining asset inventories and arranging equipment servicing where required.

  • Support the Anti-Social Behaviour (ASB) team by helping to monitor and follow up reports received from members of the public.

  • Assist with collecting and reporting performance information for CCTV Control Room Operators, Transport Safety Officers, Drone Operators and Bus Security Guards.

  • Learn how organisational policies, procedures and systems support effective service delivery.

  • Maintain confidentiality when handling sensitive information.

  • Complete your apprenticeship training, coursework and assessments alongside your day-to-day role. What we're looking for

You'll be someone who is organised, eager to learn and enjoys working with others. You will also have:

  • 3 GCSEs at Grade 4/C or above, including English and Maths.

  • A willingness to complete a Level 3 Business Administrator Apprenticeship.

  • Experience working as part of a team, through education, volunteering or part-time employment.

  • Experience supporting projects, events or group activities.

  • Confidence using Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel and Outlook.

  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal.

  • Strong organisational skills with excellent attention to detail.

  • The ability to manage your time and prioritise your workload.

  • Good analytical skills and the ability to interpret information.

  • A proactive attitude and willingness to take initiative.

  • The ability to work collaboratively in a hybrid working environment.

Location and Apprenticeship Commitment

This role is based at 16 Summer Lane, Birmingham, B19 3SD. We currently operate a hybrid working model, which means splitting your time between the office and home, subject to business need and agreement with your line manager.

As this is an apprenticeship, you'll have dedicated time during your working week to complete your learning and coursework alongside gaining practical experience within the team.

How to apply

Follow our application process – there will be some pre-application questionnaires for you to complete.

Successful applicants will be invited to an Assessment centre in August 2025. Further information will be shared with successful candidates after the closing date.
