Job summary

The National Archives has the responsibility of preserving and making accessible one of the largest and most important archival collections in the world, with documents from William the Conqueror to HM Queen Elizabeth II, from Domesday to the Treaty of Versailles, from Shakespeare to Darwin and digitised or born-digital records , we take this obligation very seriously and we are keen to balance this with our ambition of becoming a sustainable organisation.

Working as part of The National Archives’ Sustainability Team, this part-time role supports the collection, organisation and maintenance of accurate data that underpins our environmental sustainability reporting. You will help track key metrics, integrate new and historic data, and create interactive visualisations that enable the delivery of our sustainability work and allow access to reliable information for progress monitoring.

Person specification

Essential criteria:

  • Qualification or equivalent experiences in a relevant field such as, but not limited to, sustainability, environmental management or working experience within the sustainability field (any sector).
  • Familiarity with PowerBI and environmental datasets such as energy, emissions, waste, water or supply‑chain data.
  • Proven ability to work accurately with large and complex data sets and demonstrable experience in validating, formatting and transforming data into reporting platform, databases and dashboards.
  • Ability to demonstrate sustainability data and trends for non-technical audiences and senior stakeholders and maintain clear audit trails and documentation to support the transparent sustainability reporting
  • Proven ability to identify and resolve issues arising during data collection, ETL workflows and sustainability reporting cycles. A proactive, solution focused approach to improving data quality and reporting traceability.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and proven organisational skills and ability to prioritise tasks, manage competing deadlines and work independently or as part of a project team. Motivated to develop new skills and share knowledge with colleagues to uplift data quality across the organisation.

Desirable criteria:

  • Experience in working with sustainability reporting frameworks (e.g., GHG Protocol, TCFD and Greening the Government Commitment).

Our ideal candidate is adept in data analysis, collection and reporting, a keen problem-solver and qualifed or experienced in the field of sustainability and environmental management.

This is a part time role of 0.5 FTE. The successful candidate will work 18 hours per week.

A combination of onsite and home working is available and applicants should be able to regularly travel to our Kew site for a minimum of 60% of their work time.
Application Process

• Interview: Interviews will be held on-site, ideally week commencing 3rd August 2026. As part of the interview you will be required to present a dashboard and an underlying data model you have developed.

• Personal Statement: We ask all applicants to submit work history details and a personal statement of up to 1000 words. Selection for interview will be based on the 4 essential criteria shown below so please ensure that your application demonstrates in detail how you meet these requirements.
