Full-time, Permanent

Be the Voice That Makes a Difference

When someone dials 999, you’ll be the calm and caring voice that helps save lives. Join East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS) as an Emergency Medical Advisor (999 Call Handler) and start a career where every day you’ll make a real impact.

You’ll receive full training to handle emergency and urgent calls, guiding people through life-saving advice while dispatching help. After 12 months, you’ll progress to Emergency Medical Advisor Mentor (Band 4) supporting and developing new call handlers.

Salary includes an example average unsocial enhancement. Unsocial enhancements will vary month to month. Should you work an alternative shift pattern, unsocial hours enhancements may vary further.

You will have countless opportunities to progress; enjoy continuous professional development, helping you to develop your skills, gain new ones, and progress to roles at a higher pay grade.

What You’ll Do

  • Answer 999 and urgent calls from the public and healthcare professionals
  • Assess and prioritise calls using established clinical triage systems
  • Provide essential, pre-arrival medical instructions to callers
  • Work shifts (including nights, weekends, and public holidays) as part of a 24/7 team

Why Join EMAS?

Working for the ambulance service is an experience like no other. Every call you answer could change, or even save a life. You’ll offer reassurance, guidance, and compassion to people in crisis, helping them through some of their most difficult moments.

At EMAS, you’ll find:

  • A meaningful career: Make a direct impact on people’s lives every day.
  • Career development: Ongoing training, mentoring opportunities, and clear routes for progression.
  • Supportive environment: Work as part of a dedicated team with expert training and guidance.
  • Career progression reviews: Annual reviews to support your ambitions and growth.
