About the role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Approved Mental Health Professional based in the centralised Hammersmith & Fulham AMHP Duty Service.

The successful candidate will be a qualified and experienced Approved Mental Health Professional with a recognised qualification and current regulatory registration for example Social Work England (or relevant regulatory body) alongside evidence of ongoing professional development and AMHP approval/Authorisation.


They will demonstrate significant post-qualification experience working within a multi-disciplinary mental health or community setting and bring a good level of applied knowledge of relevant legislation, including the Mental Health Act 1983, Care Act 2014, Mental Capacity Act 2005, Human Rights Act 1998, and associated statutory guidance.

The postholder will have the ability to undertake the full range of AMHP duties, including coordinating and leading Mental Health Act assessments, making complex and defensible decisions, and ensuring that interventions are lawful, proportionate, and grounded in a human rights-based approach.

They will be confident in managing complex risk, undertaking safeguarding enquiries under Section 42 of the Care Act, and chairing multi-agency meetings where required. The role requires strong communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to engage effectively in challenging situations, influence professional decision-making, and provide expert advice and guidance to colleagues and partner organisations.

They will also maintain accurate and timely recording in line with organisational and legal standards and actively manage workload within a dynamic AMHP Duty environment.

A commitment to continuous professional development, maintaining up-to-date knowledge of legislation, policy and best practice, and contributing to service improvement is essential. Experience of, or willingness to undertake, additional roles such as Practice Assessor or Best Interest Assessor is expected in line with Adult Social Care service development and implementation.
