We are looking for an enthusiastic individual to join our Internal Audit Team to undertake an apprenticeship in Internal Audit.

The successful applicant will develop knowledge and understanding of the role of Internal Auditor through a combination of formal and on the job training.

This apprenticeship, developed in partnership with the Institute of Internal Auditors, is the ideal start to a career in Internal Audit. You'll develop the knowledge, skill and behaviours to undertake all aspects of internal audit engagements.


What training will the apprentices undertake?

The successful candidate will undertake the Level 4 Internal Audit Technician Apprenticeship as part of which you'll also be awarded the Foundation of Internal Auditing (FIA) designation.

We will support you to complete your apprenticeship training to which a minimum of 20% of your working week will be allocated. The academic element of the apprenticeship is mainly be delivered via online learning.

What is the purpose and main responsibilities of the job?

The apprentice will help to provide assurance that the Council’s risk, control and governance arrangements are effective. You’ll start by shadowing more experienced auditors to learn about the audit processes. As your knowledge and confidence grows, you will be supported to carry out your audit work independently across the following areas:

  • To undertake and assist with delivery of risk based internal audits and counter-fraud reviews across all activities of the Council, with appropriate supervision. This includes planning/research, conducting, testing and producing reports, including making recommendations for improvement.
  • To assist with the conduct of special investigations into suspected cased of fraud, corruption and whistleblowing, including research, compilation of evidence and interview, should these arise.
  • To assist with the production of team planning and performance management information.
  • To assist with the delivery of the Data Analytics strategy through the analysis and presentation of data using a variety of techniques and software
  • To work within agreed guidelines and to performance targets / standards including Global Internal Audit Standards, including maintaining appropriate documentation and use of the Audit Management System.

What skills and qualifications are required for this post?

  • Minimum of 2 A-Levels or equivalent (Essential)
  • GCSE Grade 5 in English and Maths (Essential)
  • Ability to communicate clearly at all levels verbally and in writing (Essential)
  • Ability to plan and manage own workload (Essential)
  • Ability to work on own initiative and as part of a team (Essential)
  • Effective interpersonal skills, assertive, persuasive, and able to establish trusting relationships (Essential)
  • Ability to present complex information professionally and succinctly in an engaging manner (Essential)
  • Ability to demonstrate and promote strong ethical standards including independence and objectivity (Essential)
  • Numerate and analytical: able to manipulate, analyse and present large volumes of data (Essential)
  • Ability to deal sensitively and appropriately with confidential information (Essential)
  • Good organisational skills and thorough attention to detail (Essential)
  • Ability to learn other software packages and ICT applications as required (Essential)
  • Demonstrate an appreciation and commitment to diversity in both colleagues and service users (Essential)
  • Experience of Microsoft Office including Word and Excel to analyse and manipulate data and present results (Desirable)

What are the other requirements?

  • Commitment to complete the Apprenticeship training
  • Must be able to attend the BCP Council Civic Centre (Bournemouth) in person regularly. Initially, the requirement would be for a minimum of three days a week, but with increasing flexibility during the period of the apprenticeship.
  • On occasion, must be able to travel across the BCP Council area (e.g. by public transport/car/bicycle)
