Do you have a passion for maritime operations? Could you help provide an efficient harbour control and maritime service to uphold regulations and ensure that Falkland Islands maritime safety and security is maintained? Do you hold an Officer of the Watch (Deck) STCW REG II/1 (Unlimited) Certificate of Competency or a Vessel Traffic Service operators’ certificate with 5 years’ relevant experience? Do you like the idea of working in one of the most beautiful places in the world with amazing landscapes, friendly communities and incredible wildlife? If you have answered yes to these questions, then you could be the new Assistant Harbour Master the Falkland Islands Maritime Authority (FIMA) are looking for.

The Role

With direction from the Deputy Harbour Master, this role includes oversight of harbour and port operations, including vessel traffic monitoring, promulgation of maritime safety information and control of vessel movements within the main harbours of the Falkland Islands, port and harbour patrols, and assisting in carrying out ship sanitation inspections.

In addition to harbour control duties, the successful candidate will be part of a small team who are responsible for all aspects of maritime safety for Falkland Islands waters. The Falklands is a Category 2 Red Ensign Group registry with responsibility for ensuring compliance with all flag, port and coastal state obligations. This extensive remit requires all members of the team to work together and be flexible and adaptable to varying work demands.

With no dedicated coastguard service, FIMA are responsible for the co-ordination of the emergency response to any maritime accidents and incidents, including pollution incidents and the control of maritime accidents and incidents within Falkland Islands waters. As part of the Falkland Islands Emergency services, we operate on the (Joint Emergency Services Interoperability program (JESIP).

The Person:

  • Holds an Officer of the Watch (Deck) STCW REG II/1 (Unlimited) Certificate of Competency or Vessel Traffic Services Operatives qualification, with 5 years’ experience.
  • A current valid driver’s licence.
  • Understands the principles of safe management of vessel operations, marine meteorology, emergency response, port control operations, pilotage and relevant health and safety and security legislation such as the PMSC and ISPS Codes.
  • Able to integrate and work with team members across Government directorates.

N.B. Applicants without the qualifications listed above may be considered if they satisfy other requirements to a high level or have had previous experience within port operations or other relevant experience appropriate to the post.

Due to the potential of involvement in Falkland Islands security matters, applicants must be a British Citizens (ie hold British Citizenship or British Overseas Territory Citizenship) and be able to obtain appropriate security clearances for the role.

The Package

  • Fixed Term Contract up to 4 years.
  • Starting Salary £36,274 to £41,668 (depending on qualifications and experience) rising to £44,564
  • Eligibility for a 25% Gratuity, paid upon successful completion of the contract.
  • 30 Days Annual Leave, plus government and public holidays (totalling 41 days leave).
  • Relocation Allowance, to help with moving costs.
