Hounslow is the world in one place and full of potential. We are stepping up for our residents like never before.

About our Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion

We live by five core values: Lead with Heart, Do New, Pass on the Power, Harness the Mix and Be a Rock. All our work has equality, diversity and inclusion at its very heart, best articulated in “Harness the Mix”. It's about breaking down barriers between our parts and people and unlocking the problem-solving power of our amazing mix of minds. We serve a diverse community, we have a diverse workforce and we are committed to being an inclusive employer.

We work hard to create representation across our workforce and leadership community, we have thriving employee network groups and our learning and development programmes help us lead, model and breathe ways of working that eliminate inequality, inequity, injustice and bias.

As part of this and under our commitments as a Disability Confident Employer, we make reasonable adjustments to accommodate our candidates. There’s space for you to tell us what you need within our application form.

Our Benefits

If you join us, you’ll have access to a range of employee benefits. Read more about these here.

About The Role

This is an exciting opportunity to join our Transport Planning and Road Safety team as a Principal Strategic Transport Planner.

In this role you’ll be responsible for developing and delivering our Transport Strategy which is about making travel in the borough healthy, clean, green, safe, efficient and inclusive.

Improving sustainable travel is embedded in our new Corporate Plan and you will ensure our Transport Strategy aims and objectives are fully embedded into other council strategies and policies.

You will develop our strategic transport policies, lead on strategic transport projects, work with partners to promote and deliver improved public transport services including new rail links and travel to Heathrow airport, and promote improvements to our bus network all to deliver growth and equality. You will have an eye on innovation and look to the future of how people will travel.

You will have responsibility for overseeing funding bids to help deliver our capital programme and will have responsibility for managing our TfL funding programme.

Put simply, this role represents a fantastic opportunity to work with colleagues across the council to ensure active and sustainable travel is fully embedded into everything we do. You’ll be part of a creative team with clear values centered around curiosity, making things happen, seeing the bigger picture, collaborating and achieving positive outcomes.

About The Team You’ll Be Working In

Our Transport Planning team is responsible for promoting active and sustainable travel within the borough to ensure our transport network benefits all of our communities. We work especially closely with our Regeneration and Planning teams to promote growth, with our Environment and Climate teams to deliver sustainability, and with our Equalities team to deliver inclusivity.

Recent engagement has told us that residents want a better transport network and this is reflected in our Transport Strategy and related action plans that cover walking and wheeling, cycling, and public transport. We are focussed on delivering these plans and the team will play a key role in making transformational improvements for all our residents.

In this respect we work closely with external partners including TfL and rail operators to ensure they are delivering the public transport services our residents want and need, including with our neighbouring boroughs to ensure seamless travel.

We are responsible for overseeing the annual Local Implementation Plan and developing the strategic case for delivering our capital works programme, including our walking and cycling networks, bus priority, school streets, and other projects aimed at increasing sustainable mode share.

The team delivers our school travel planning programme and works alongside our Road Safety team, who manage our cycle training and road safety education programmes, to promote active and sustainable travel for children and adults.

About You

If the points below resonate with you, we’d love you to put in an application:

• You are an experienced transport planner who has experience in delivering strategic transport policy and programmes.

• You’ll be able to work quickly and efficiently across a portfolio of projects.

• An excellent knowledge of the transport planning and policy context that exists in London is important, and you’ll have a solid understanding of best practice in the delivery of transport projects and travel-demand management initiatives.

• As a skilful communicator, you’ll be able to share your knowledge and point of view with colleagues, developers, councillors and the public through clear and compelling written reports and verbal presentations.

• Above all, you should be passionate about working collaboratively as part of an innovative team to develop the transport network in Hounslow, helping us to achieve our challenging targets to improve safety and increase sustainable travel.
