Job Introduction

Facilities Apprentice

Level 2 Apprenticeship (Grade 3, £24,796 to £25,989 per annum)

Start your career by helping to keep our Council buildings safe, welcoming and running smoothly every day.

Are you practical, organised, keen to learn new skills and build a career in local government? East Staffordshire Borough Council is looking for an enthusiastic Facilities Apprentice to join our Facilities Team. This is a great opportunity to earn while you learn, gain hands-on experience and play an important role in supporting the buildings and spaces used by our staff, partners, visitors and local communities.

About the role

As an Apprentice in Facilities, you will support a wide range of tasks across Council

buildings, from helping with planned and reactive maintenance to supporting room set-ups, liaising with contractors, dealing with quotations for works, stock control, records, post operations and customer enquiries. You will work alongside experienced colleagues who will guide and support you while you develop confidence, workplace skills and knowledge of facilities management.

What you will be doing

  • Supporting general maintenance across corporate and community buildings.
  • Helping to keep records, documents and systems accurate and up to date.
  • Assisting with enquiries from staff, contractors, Councillors, partners and members of the public.
  • Supporting room set-ups, post operations, stock control and facilities projects.
  • Learning about health and safety, compliance, customer service and energy use across Council buildings.
  • Undertaking a Facilities Management apprenticeship with training and support throughout.

During the apprenticeship, the successful applicant will undertake vocational training alongside their workplace duties. This training will support them to develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours required for the role and to work towards successful completion of the apprenticeship.

What we are looking for

We are looking for someone with the right attitude, willingness to learn and enthusiasm to make a positive contribution. You should be reliable, polite, practical, willing to ask questions and able to work well as part of a team.

A positive and hardworking approach.

  • Good communication skills and confidence speaking to different people.
  • Good attention to detail and willingness to follow instructions.
  • An interest in practical maintenance, some experience of using basic tools, buildings, customer service or facilities work.
  • 5 GCSE passes including English, Maths or equivalent qualifications.

Why join us?

  • Earn while you learn and work towards a recognised apprenticeship.
  • Receive training, guidance and support from experienced colleagues.
  • Gain varied, practical experience across a busy public sector facilities service.
  • Develop transferable skills in teamwork, communication, organisation and problem solving.
  • Make a visible difference by helping to maintain safe, welcoming and well-run Council buildings.

We also offer a generous package of benefits including:

  • flexible working hours
  • generous annual leave
  • opportunities for hybrid working
  • free car parking
  • local government pension scheme

The appointment is for a fixed term, 2-year contract and subject to performance, the Apprentice may be considered for permanent positions should they arise during the initial two-year contract. If a permanent vacancy is advertised during the apprenticeship, the Apprentice is welcome to submit an application in line with the Council’s recruitment process.

Working hours

The contracted hours of work are 37 hours per week, Monday to Friday with a flexible working hours scheme. On occasion, you may be required to work earlier or later to support service delivery, cover absence or meet service needs.

Full details of the job role are detailed in the Job Description and Person Specification.

Applications must include a written statement, in no more than 1,000 words, on how you meet the person specification for this role.

Additional Information

The Council is actively building diverse teams and welcomes applications from everyone including people of different ages, sex, gender, ethnicity, religion and sexual orientation. ESBC is a Disability Confident Employer.
