Director of Children’s Services

Salary package circa £160k plus a relocation package

Why Bexley?

We may not be the biggest London borough, but few can match our quality of life. We have more than 100 parks and open spaces, the second longest river frontage in London, plus unique history and heritage. People come here to bring up their families, stay and enjoy life.

We’re working hard to ensure that we maximise the benefits of the new Crossrail station at Abbey Wood. Our vision is for places where people can live and work, with improved transport connections that make it easier to travel to and across the borough.

Our Children’s Social Care Services were rated ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted in 2018. Our reputation continues to grow as we lead the shift towards prevention and multi-agency safeguarding hubs.

Overall 80% of all our school pupils attend ‘good’ or better schools. More Bexley young people achieve 5 or above in Maths and English compared to the national average. There is a strong partnership between schools and the Council, focused on working together to solve complex local education issues.

This is the perfect time to join us as Director of Children’s Services. While we are ‘outstanding’, we are certainly not complacent. We want to continue our improvement journey.

Our former Director, Jacky Tiotto, has now moved to Cafcass as Chief Executive. As you would expect, there is much to build on: good social work practice, positive performance outcomes and a well-managed budget. We are making sustained progress in Signs of Safety and investing in prevention. We are improving the lives of our most vulnerable children.

Your responsibilities will cover children’s social care, education, early help, youth services (including youth offending), 14-19 learning, skills and employment.

Over 45% of our workforce in children’s services are residents. We have built a motivated team with bags of experience and local knowledge. We have a high level of permanent staff and a track record of identifying talent and developing people to go on to greater things.

You will bring your own style of leadership, creativity and innovation. You will be given strong political support, with elected Members and partners who understand the complexity and importance of our work.

We need you to play your part in delivering our growth strategy, to ensure that the borough develops over the next 30 years in a way that connects our communities and supports our children and families, by keeping them safe, healthy and giving them every opportunity to thrive.

Whether you are an existing Director or searching for the next step in your career, this role will give you the opportunity to make a real impact. If you are looking to work with colleagues across the Council and with our partners to improve the lives of all our children, young people and families, we will be delighted to hear from you.

You will be joining an ambitious leadership team led by Chief Executive Jackie Belton, who joined Bexley earlier this year. She is very happy to discuss the role in more detail with you.
