£28,147 per annum pro-rata to £30,660 for 36 hours per week, across 42 weeks per year (term-time) based at Quadrant Court, Woking.

About the role
Physical & Sensory Support (PSS) is a county- wide team which sits in the Children, Schools and Families Directorate. PSS uses specialist knowledge to support children and young people (C&YP), ranging from 0-25 years with physical and/or sensory impairment (PSI) and through the PSS Post 16 team those over 16 years of age in colleges and universities.
PSS P16 Team consists of approximately 30 support staff, including student support workers (SSWs), BSL interpreters and four advisory teachers for sensory impairment. The wider PSS team include qualified teachers of the deaf and visually impaired, audiology technicians and deaf instructors.
Although you will be based at Surrey CC office (Woking), this is mostly a peripatetic role, providing interpreting to a variety of clients in a range of settings (including schools, colleges, universities) in and around Surrey.
To facilitate sign language interpreting assignments, including high level BSL/SSE to English skills and English to BSL/SSE, on behalf of PSS (Physical and Sensory Support).
You will provide interpreting support to deaf and hearing PSS staff to facilitate service delivery. This will include accompanying deaf colleagues to visits at different settings (including schools) around Surrey in order to interpret (BSL/SSE/English) as required. You will also be providing support to students with complex physical and/or sensory impairment to access Further and Higher Education courses.
Part of the role will include providing support to department colleagues and undertaking relevant project work during non-contact time, as agreed with the head of department.
To be shortlisted to interview for this position your application will clearly evidence:
- Current registration with NRCPD as a fully qualified or trainee British Sign Language interpreter (RSLI / TSLI)
- Experience of working with deaf people, particularly within education
- An ability to interpret accurately between BSL and English
- Flexibility to travel during the day to cover the interpreting requirements of the service, with use of your own car for business purposes
