Southend-on-Sea Borough Council delivers a wide range of vital services at the heart of the community, as well as investing in exciting and ambitious projects that keep Southend-on-Sea firmly on the map. The council are seeking to recruit a Revenues Officer to join the Council Tax, Recovery and Non-Domestic Rates team.

Your new role

The Revenues Officer will deal with the day-to-day administration, billing, collection and recovery of local taxation, and miscellaneous income owed to the Council. The department receives a high volume of telephone calls which the Revenues Officers are required to deal with. Due to the nature of the work some calls can be difficult to manage, therefore it is essential that you have a strong background in delivering excellent customer service in a pressured environment. The Revenues Officers will be required to attend Court where they assist members of the public in matters relating to Court summonses and outstanding debt.

Whilst a Revenues Officer is part of a team, they are required to demonstrate their ability to work independently and make decisions for themselves as part of their role is to respond to customer’s requests, maintain customer’s accounts and award discount and exemptions which carry a monetary value.

What you'll need to succeed

To be successful in this role, you need to have strong communications skills, eye for detail as is an eye for detail and you need to be able to demonstrate an understanding of working within the constraints of legislation and knowledge of working in a Local Authority.

A knowledge of General Data Protection is essential for this role as you will be dealing with enquiries from the general public, councillors and other departments. Officers are also required to achieve daily targets, therefore, applicants should be able to demonstrate experience working in a performance-driven environment.

It would be an advantage if the applicants have experience working in a debt recovery environment as a majority of the role is dealing with customers in arrears, negotiating payment arrangements, taking suitable recovery action on summonsed debts as well as discussing bankruptcies and charging orders, however, this is not essential. IRRV qualifications would also be an advantage for this role but not essential.

What you'll get in return

  • Generous annual leave entitlement – 23 days, rising 1 day per year up to 28 days. A further 2 days after 15 years’ service.

  • Interest-free loans for car park permits and bus or train passes – available once probation period successfully completed.
