Surrey County Council is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. We want to be an inclusive and diverse employer of first choice reflecting the community we serve and particularly welcome applications from all under represented groups.

About the role

Surrey County Council delivers high-quality care for service-users with mental health and substance misuse needs. We are leading the way in implementing new ways of working in personalisation, and a recovery-focused, strength based approach. Our goal is for customers to be able to make informed choices about the services they use, be more in control of their care, and to be active citizens within their community.

We are in the process of transferring our service management back to Surrey County Council following the termination of the Section 75 agreement with the NHS.

This will provide exciting opportunities to develop Mental Health Social Care teams and to deliver services to all Surrey residents who meet social care criteria in line with the Care Act in relation to their mental health needs.

We are looking for enthusiastic and qualified Approved Mental Health Professionals (AMHPs) who can provide effective support for people with mental health needs using a strength based approach to enable individuals to live as independently as possible with more choice and control.

You will be responsible for undertaking statutory duties under the Care Act and Mental Health Act and be part of a rota for the Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) service. We will offer clear professional leadership and great opportunities to develop your career. You will be supported to offer supervision, training and professional development of staff, students and volunteers, and be responsible for your own personal training in order to maintain up-to-date knowledge of mental health issues.

To join us, you should have a Professional Qualification in Social Work, and Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) status and post qualifying experience that should include direct work with those who have mental health needs. In addition to this, you should have a working knowledge of legislation, assessments, preparation of care plans, monitoring and reviewing outcomes.

You should also hold a current full driving licence and have use of a vehicle to undertake this role.
