We are looking for an Independent Person to assist in promoting and maintaining high standards of conduct amongst elected councillors and co-opted members of both Arun District Council and the Town/Parish Councils within the Arun District.
About this role
The role of the Independent Person is to support the work of Arun District Council’s Standards Committee and to consider complaints made against councillors and co-opted members, offering views on any action to be taken in response to these complaints.
The Independent Person may also be involved in the independent review of any recommendation to dismiss one of the Council’s Statutory Officers.
In terms of commitment required, the Standards Committee meets four times a year (currently in the evening) and involvement in complaints is ad hoc.
Attributes and experience we are seeking
Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate:
- Experience of reviewing information to reach evidence based conclusions
- Strong personal ethics
- High standards of probity
- Good committee skills
- Strong communication skills
Evidence of mediation or dispute resolution would be helpful, as would knowledge of public sector ethical governance issues.
The Independent Person is not a salaried position. The role does attract an allowance payable under the Council’s Members Allowances Scheme which currently equates to £480 per annum based on three Independent Persons being appointed sharing the annual allowance of £1,440. Travelling and subsistence expenses can also be claimed based on the Members Allowances Scheme.

Current and former (within the last five years) councillors, co-opted members or employees of Arun District Council or any Town/Parish Council within the Arun District. Relatives or close friends of current councillors, co-opted members or employees of Arun District Council or any Town/Parish Council within the Arun District.
As this is an independent position, you should not be a member of any political party.
