The Port of Grimsby and Immingham is the UK’s largest port by tonnage, handling around 12% (62.6 million tonnes) of the UK’s cargo.  Benefiting from a prime deep-water location on the Humber Estuary, one of Europe’s busiest trade routes, it plays a central role in the commercial life of the UK.

North East Lincolnshire Council Commercial and Regulatory Team has responsibility for imported food controls at one of the busiest Border Control Posts in the UK for the import of fishery products.

As additions to our team we looking for decision makers who are self-motivated and have excellent planning and organising, investigation, inspection, advisory, statistical and enforcement skills.

Able to manage effective relationships, the ideal candidates will be able to demonstrate excellent interpersonal effectiveness particularly with regard to reading situations in which they may find themselves where a clear, consistent judgement of that situation will be required.  This will be underpinned by effective legal, technical and knowledge of good practice in order to play an active role in securing food safety compliance within the Authority.

Key elements of the role are:-

  • enforcing food hygiene and standards legislation, communicable disease, health and safety and public health legislation
  • help to support the service delivery within the busy Port Health section of the team
  • provide operational support in relation to issuing Export Health Certificates for fish and fishery products.

You will also receive training to assist in imported food controls

A link to the role purpose and job tasks is attached and employee specification is attached.

You will hold or be willing to work towards a Higher Certificate in Food Control (equivalent to HNC level) or equivalent qualification recognised by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) and/or Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH).

Previous experience or relevant qualifications in health and safety enforcement is desirable. If you are working towards the Higher Certificate in Food Control, you should have a minimum of three A-Levels, one of which is in a science or a food technology subject.

You will also be committed to continuing personal and professional development including maintaining authorised officer competencies and CPD requirements of the Statutory Food Law Code of Practice.

In return we offer a flexible working environment, a career average pension scheme with the option for additional voluntary contributions, car parking, the opportunity to purchase extra annual leave and other benefits.  The successful candidate will receive the necessary training and guidance and support in their role.
