Purpose of the Job
To assess the needs of unpaid carers of adults using a whole-family approach and to work in partnership with key agencies in order to:
- Maintain the independence, physical health and emotional wellbeing of carers and their families
- Empower and support carers to manage their caring roles and have a life outside of caring
- Ensure carers receive the right support, at the right time, in the right place
- Respect the carers decision about how much care they will provide and respect the carers decision about not providing care at all

You will work in our small, friendly and supportive Carers Assessment team providing creative solutions to enable carers to continue to care whilst maintaining balance & good quality of life through supporting access to work, leisure, education and regular breaks.
Our ethos here in Brighton & Hove is to put our carers at the centre of everything we do and we actively encourage staff within the team to work together with other colleagues across the wider Health Adult Social Care service and partner agencies so that we can better meet the needs of our clients. The support for carers is central to the delivery of our wider goals and we work in close partnership with our local Carers Centre to help deliver this.
It is an exciting time to join us as we look to continue to improve our integrated service offer to our residents. Currently, we are working to support new online systems which will provide more choice and options for our customers and we are particularly keen to develop our digital offer.
You will be expected to manage a caseload of work. This will involve:
- carrying out assessments of carers’ needs in the context of their caring role. When appropriate this may ential some joint carers/cared for person assessments.
- Low level non-complex care planning for the cared for person, in the context of the carers needs.
- Where appropriate have access to prescribing non-complex low level daily living aids (Enhanced Assessor Level)
- Providing information and advice to empower carers to manage any health conditions/disabilities
- Provide information and advice regarding access to and types of assistive technology.
- Providing information and advice regarding available voluntary / community based services
- preparing reports and referrals on to other services
- Where appropriate contributing to specific project work and improvements to the service.
Among other skills and abilities you must have:
- Experience of working directly with people with care and support needs and/or unpaid carers (including lived experience of caring)
- Experience of liaising and working with other agencies and professionals
- Experience of working under pressure and managing competing demands
- Knowledge of the Care Act 2014, other legislation and statutory guidance, policies & procedures relevant to the social care of adults and their carers
- Knowledge of local and national services, procedures and policies regarding access to benefits, funding, telecare, housing, health & social care services and community and voluntary sector services
