Senior Health and Safety Advisor

Hours:   15 hours per week (plus some additional hours)

Contract:   Fixed term for up to 12 months, or upon the return of the substantive postholder, whichever is the earliest.

We are looking for an experienced Senior Health and Safety Advisor to join our busy Health & Safety team at North Somerset Council. The role will be a fixed term, part time contract in order to provide cover for maternity leave. The postholder will be required to work a minimum of 15 hours per week, however it is expected that there will be an extra 30 days maximum service required over the course of the contract in order to cover the fluctuating needs of the service. The successful applicant should therefore have some flexibility regarding their availability in order to be able to meet these additional hours. It is anticipated that the post will begin on 1st July 2020 for a period of 1 year (or when the original postholder returns, whichever is the sooner).

The successful applicant will be important in helping to provide an effective and diverse health and safety service across a wide range of council services, including schools, waste, highways and property. You will work as part of a small team providing support and advice across different directorates and to all levels of our organisation.  The post holder will be required to help deliver the council’s H&S strategy, including developing policy and procedures, risk assessments, DSE, workplace audits, accident investigations, fire safety and training.

You will need to be able to demonstrate significant post qualification experience in a similar H&S advisory role and have a minimum of NEBOSH Diploma (or equivalent) and/or be a Graduate member of IOSH. Experience in undertaking fire risk assessments and a relevant qualification in fire safety would be desirable.

For an informal discussion, please contact Nicola Dixon on tel. 01275 884675.

Anticipated interview date:      Thursday 23 April 2020
