The Role

Southwark Council would like to recruit an enthusiastic, pro-active, resilient, improvements orientated and finance experienced individual, to work on VAT and other additional corporate finance administration work to replace a recent vacancy in the corporate finance team. The focus is on VAT with significant routine and project work in this area, which involves working with all service departments and schools.

The role will involve working on current and new emerging VAT projects as they arise and ideally requires prior detailed level of experience of VAT. The purpose of the role is to work proactively on improving HMRC VAT compliance across the council.

A key responsibility is compiling the monthly VAT return to a high-quality standard on a timely basis for review by management. Monitoring the financial system for coding for VAT purposes on a monthly basis and reporting any discrepancies / errors found.

Other duties of the role include for example monthly cash reconciliations, general journals, records maintenance, to support the manager and team.

In addition, there will be an opportunity to work on wider financial administration areas to support the manager on a range of corporate finance subjects including revenue and capital, dependent upon the candidate’s professional skills and competencies.

About you:

Candidates must have a basic/intermediate level of proficiency with excel and word and ideally have financial systems experience using SAP. Attention to detail is important for the VAT return work and candidates must be willing to develop improvements. Experience on VAT is preferred, however overall willingness to take on new aspects of VAT is equally important.

Must be comfortable giving basic VAT financial advice to service departments and assist in the provision of training on VAT across the council.

Development opportunities exist with working on more complex areas of VAT to support and assist the manager, especially on financial implications connected with VAT on capital projects.
