More about the role:

This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated person to join the Housing Assistance Team as a Technical Support Officer. The team directly supports the delivery of the Council’s Housing Assistance programme of grants and loans, including the provision of major adaptations under the Disabled Facilities Grants programme, contributing to the Council’s priority of protecting the vulnerable and improving wellbeing. In addition to this, the team are responsible for the administration of public health funerals, and provides support to other teams within Housing Services, including support with financial and other systems. So, find your greatness by making a difference to the residents of Central Bedfordshire in this role.

As a Technical Support Officer, you will be the first point of contact in the Client Support Scheme assisting vulnerable applicants with their applications for Housing Grants and Loans. You will gather the required financial evidence from applicants and perform a Test of Resources to determine the level of financial assistance that will be provided to them. Where the funded works are technical, cases will then pass to surveyor colleagues to progress, however, you will progress your own caseload of stairlift applications to completion. In addition to this work you will provide support to colleagues across Housing Services, including general administrative tasks and financial tasks such as raising invoices and payments. You will also be responsible for a caseload of public health funerals, making the necessary funeral arrangements where your investigations fail to reveal a Will or next of kin willing to make such arrangements. This will include recovery of costs from the Estate of the deceased.

The role requires excellent numeracy and customer service skills and your application will need to demonstrate that you have these skills through a relevant level 4 qualification and/or considerable experience in a relevant area of work. Attention to detail is also key to this role in order to carry out accurate financial assessments and to protect the Council from fraudulent applications. As you will be working within a team to support other teams you will need to be a good team player who is able to demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills. Your work will require using several different IT systems and applications and therefore you should be able to demonstrate good IT skills and experience. You will be expected to be able to plan and prioritise your workload effectively and to use your initiative (respecting procedure and regulation). In addition to this you should be able to explain complex information clearly, both verbally and in writing. Knowledge of housing-related environmental health legislation and the benefits/welfare system would be considered desirable rather than essential.

Join us, and take advantage of our rewards package, agile working and the chance to learn and progress. Find your greatness by helping us to deliver better services to the local community and making a difference to the lives of residents.

Central Bedfordshire Council has its own vision and values that are integral to everything we do. Our area vision is to make Central Bedfordshire 'A great place to live and work’.
