Ambitious, Innovative, Enabling, Inclusive social workers change futures for children, young people and families in North Somerset

There are exciting development opportunities available in our Community Family Teams which are currently looking for experienced Social Workers to become Consultant Social Work Practitioners.

In North Somerset we are committed to developing effective and supportive Community Family Team’s providing high quality effective social work interventions.

We are based in the communities we work in, and we endeavour to work alongside children and their families to support them to achieve the best outcomes. North Somerset uses Signs of Safety as our social work model and full training is available across the workforce. We have also been investing in training for practitioners to become more trauma informed within their practice.

Our Community Family Teams are made up of Consultant Social Workers, Social Workers and Family Support Workers, all overseen by the Team Leader. The work is varied from Single Assessments, Child in Need work, Child Protection work, Proceedings and through to Adoption. We believe that by remaining involved throughout a child’s journey you will experience job satisfaction as well as providing better outcomes for the child and their family.

Our Family Support Workers offer tailored individual support for families but are also experts at delivering parenting groups ranging from Mellow bumps to NVR. This valuable resource, alongside other interventions such as our edge of care Turning the Tide service, means that as a Social Worker you have access to a wide range of support to enable you to work with families towards positive change.

The North Community Family Teams are based in Clevedon and Portishead with the locality covering from Long Ashton to the edges of Weston Super Mare. The area is varied covering very rural areas with high levels of deprivation and limited transport links and outside agency provisions; but also, more affluent and connected areas.

Our South Community Family Team covers central Weston-super-Mare and areas close to the centre.

We understand the key to supporting families is to support our Social Workers and the North teams work closely together with a strong culture of peer learning and support. There is a Team Leader based within each team, who offer monthly formal supervision as well as being open and available for informal conversations and support day to day.

The role of the Consultant Social Worker is a chance to develop your skills whilst still being able to work directly with children and their families. Direct work with children is expected in the role and is seen as a key way to learn more about children’s lives; keep plans relevant to their needs; and help them to understand their life story. Consultant Social Workers case hold, but also support team learning and development alongside the Team Leader. This is a role where you will develop, or strengthen, your supervision and managerial skills by supervising students; mentoring ASYE’s and offering learning opportunities for the team for example by facilitating Signs of Safety Case Mappings.

If our Community Family Teams sound like the place you want to be as you develop your emerging leadership skills alongside continuing to develop your practice; and if like us, you strive to keep children and their families at the centre of all you do; then we would love to hear from you.

As this is a senior role, we ask that those applying have at least one years post qualifying experience within statutory work.

This post is exempt under the provisions of the Rehabilitations of Offenders Act (Exceptions) Order 1975 and is subject to an enhanced Criminal Records Bureau check.

North Somerset Council is an equal opportunities employer. We welcome applications from all sections of our community regardless of age, disability, sex, race, religion, belief or sexual orientation. North Somerset Council is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.
