Brighton and Hove is a place with an agenda for real change which makes planning and conservation work both interesting and challenging. We are one of the busiest unitary planning services and this role will help to ensure that the city’s extensive heritage is carefully conserved as the city develops.
The city is tightly constrained between the sea to the south and the South Downs National Park to the north. It has a wealth of heritage assets including c3400 listed buildings, 33 conservation areas, six registered parks and gardens and c400 locally listed heritage assets. All of this presents a challenging and rewarding range of work for our Policy, Projects & Heritage Team, which is part of the wider Planning and Building Control service.
About the role
We are developing a modern, positive and customer focused Planning Service. We know that staff are the most important asset of the service and we are investing in development and training.
This is an exciting opportunity for a suitably experienced heritage professional to join a dedicated team that has a large and varied workload, providing specialist advice on the historic built environment. The successful post holder will be expected to assess the impact of proposed changes to heritage assets and their settings and provide reasoned advice based upon current legislation, national and local policy and best practice. This will also include advising the Planning Enforcement team where investigations relate to impacts on heritage assets.
The post will additionally provide opportunities to contribute to heritage policy and projects and to address heritage at risk. This may involve assessing heritage assets, determining their significance and/or advising on measures to secure their preservation or enhancement.
The post holder will be responsible for managing a complex work programme of planning-related activities and enquiries but will be well supported by a robust leadership framework and a supportive and knowledgeable team.
