Machine Driver

Lancaster City Council are looking for an enthusiastic, passionate and self-motivated individual to assist in the delivery of Street Cleansing across the district. Street cleansing is a very high-profile service and we need the best people to delivery it.

The work can be varied and interesting and it is essential you can appreciate the important contribution these services have in improving our local environment, economic development and the image of the area.  Your role will be part of a team that maintains the cleanliness of the district’s streets, parks and open spaces.

Based at the White Lund Depot in Morecambe, the main duties of the post will be to operate a mechanical sweeper to remove all litter and detritus from a variety of areas of the district.  Other duties include emptying of litterbins within a defined area, assisting with the removal of fly tipping, snow clearance and de-icing.  You must possess good communication skills and have the ability to undertake a range of duties and to learn quickly, undertaking these tasks with a minimum of supervision.

A full current UK driving licence is essential, as the post holder will be required to drive the Schmidt and Johnson road sweepers according to schedule and to maintain the cleanliness of the vehicle. The post holder must hold a C1 licence which is required when using these vehicles. Other duties include litter picking, clearing fly tipping, emptying litter bins and assisting the Grounds Maintenance staff with their duties.

The hours of work will be 37 per week, working 5 days out of 7, Monday to Sunday on a shift rota basis. You must be flexible as early morning, evening and weekend work will be required.

The nature of the position means that inevitably you will be required to work in all weather conditions. Personal Protective Equipment will be provided.

Earlier last year Lancaster City Council unanimously declared a climate emergency and will therefore work towards reducing carbon emissions to net-zero by 2030. As part of this role, you will be expected to participate and work towards reducing carbon emissions.

Excellent benefits include: A Local Government Pension Scheme (the Council makes a 15.5% contribution). Discounted gym membership and discount on days out, activities and retail.

Interview date: Thursday 10 December 2020
