The Lexcel accredited Legal Services is based in the beautiful Grade II listed County Hall in Hertford, within easy reach by train of North and East London. With over 100 employees, it is one of the largest legal departments in local government and provides a full legal service across all specialisms to both the Council and to other public sector bodies.
We are looking to grow our successful Environment and Property Law Teams, central to the broad portfolio of legal work connected with Hertfordshire’s major infrastructure and regeneration projects, supporting the wider growth and development agenda for the County.

Planning & Highways Lawyers -2 posts one off £3,000 welcome payment + £2,500 p.a. market forces
The Environment Law Team is critical to the success of the Council’s ambitious Growth Agenda and provides the opportunity to be involved in major infrastructure projects, drafting and negotiating a wide range of planning and highways agreements and providing specialist planning, highways and rights of way advice to the Council’s Environment & Infrastructure department.
We are looking for lawyers who may not have previous experience in these areas of law, but who possess excellent drafting skills and a strong interest in developing specialist knowledge in non – contentious planning and highways work.
Employer Pension Contribution: HCC Employer contribution is 20.6% (subject to review)
The Property Law Team provides legal advice and assistance to client departments and District Councils on a wide range of property issues and transactions, and also offers the opportunity to be involved in supporting a number of the Council’s major infrastructure and community facing projects.
We welcome applicants who possesses excellent drafting skills and the ability to negotiate documents for a wide range of property transactions. Ideally you would have comprehensive knowledge of the broad spectrum of property work, including Landlord and Tenant matters, conveyancing, and investigating and advising on the implications of changing legislation and case law, whilst also being interested in developing specialist knowledge in other areas, such as agricultural law.
You should be highly motivated, enthusiastic and organised, with a proactive and “can do” attitude with a willingness to work with internal and external clients across a wide range of property matters.
Previous experience of working within a Local Authority environment would be useful but is not essential. It is possible that the role involves travel to other parts of Hertfordshire so access to your own transport would be beneficial.
