Gravesham Borough Council is to further expand its Direct Services workforce in the second stage of a programme that has seen it improve its repairs and maintenance service to its tenants and become more cost effective. 

As a council, we are the only one in Kent with its own Direct Services Organisation, employing skilled workers to carry out repairs and maintenance to council-owned homes. Since the initial lockdown due to Covid-19 in March, we have taken extra steps to keep our workforce safe and and in employment.

Since 2018 it has recruited an additional 25 members of staff, allowing kitchen and bathroom works to be brought in-house. Which led to us being shortlisted as a finalist in the category of Maintenance Team of the Year in the national Housing Heroes Awards in July 2019. Our submission outlined our journey and achievements and it was a proud moment for all of the workforce to be recognised and shortlisted. 

We are on the lookout again for an additional 23 additional workers, allowing as much repair and maintenance work as possible to be retained in house and to bring the council‘s electrical upgrade programme in house too. The role  

DSO Building Maintenance provides a repairs and maintenance service to the council’s tenants. We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated Multi Trade Electrician carry out all aspects of electrical repairs and installations to occupied, unoccupied properties and public buildings which include communal and external areas to a high standard and in accordance with legislation.

Ideally successful applicants will meet the following criteria:

  • City & Guilds Level 3 qualification 263 – 2382
  • City and Guilds 18th Edition BS7671
  • City and Guilds 2391 or equivalent Periodic test and inspection
  • Have knowledge within the electrical field: including distribution and wiring in residential and commercial properties.
  • Multi Skill Experience.
  • Trouble shooting skills.
  • Excellent customer service skills.

Main responsibilities

Undertake a range of specialist tasks including:

  • Day to day repair and maintenance
  • Installation of kitchen electrical installation
  • Electrical periodic condition reports
  • Emergency lighting inspection and repair
  • Emergency out of hours cover on a rota basis
