North Somerset’s Materials Laboratory requires a Materials Engineer to assist the Lead Engineer (Highway Materials) in the operating of the laboratory. The laboratory provides a construction materials testing service to both North Somerset Council and a number of neighbouring authorities. The work at the laboratory is principally the testing and sampling of bituminous materials and will be site as well as laboratory based.
Applicants should have a qualification in Civil Engineering or a Science subject at HNC level or above. For those with no direct experience of highway engineering or materials testing, the successful candidate will receive training and development to allow them to undertake the full range of activities undertaken by the laboratory. In addition, following a successful induction period, personal development will be available to a suitable candidate to allow them to meet the required competencies to undertake a more senior role within the facility. Applications are also welcomed from those who can demonstrate previous experience in materials testing or in a highway discipline such as maintenance.
The post requires site visits and so the successful candidate should hold a valid driving licence or be able to provide alternative, suitable method of travel. A vehicle will be provided for site work. This role will require some heavy lifting and working outside in all weathers.
