Historic Environment Record Assistant

This is a 24 month fixed term contract.

Surrey County Council’s Historic Environment Planning Team (HEP) has been awarded a grant from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government/Historic England, as part of the Local Heritage List Campaign, to host a project to create or review the Local Lists of Heritage Assets of six district and borough partner authorities in the county. The award covers the appointment of an Historic Environment Record Assistant to complete the transfer and publication of the results on the county’s Historic Environment Record (HER).

In addition, HEP is about to embark on an ambitious digitisation programme, involving the scanning and archiving of large amounts of paper-only reference material arising from the Surrey HER’s status as the most comprehensive record of archaeological sites, finds and historic monuments in the county. The forthcoming programme will involve the transfer of paper files to digital media and the creation of new and enhanced records and records-management systems. The successful applicant will be expected to play a pivotal role in this programme, which will run in tandem with the Local Listing Project in the first year, and then continue for a further 12 months following its conclusion.

Although primarily based with HEP in Woking, the role will likely involve a considerable degree of remote working and possibly some community engagement. To contribute to this key area of work, we are looking for a self-motivated person with strong attention to detail who can work on their own initiative as well as within a team. Applicants will have good organisational and communication skills, and ideally previous experience or awareness of HERs through work, academic education or research. Duties will include:

  • creating database and GIS records incorporating the results of the Local Listing Project
  • sorting and collation of records ready for digitisation
  • database and file management

To be shortlisted for interview your CV and personal statement must clearly evidence the following as a minimum requirement:

  • 5+ GCSEs as the minimum requirement
  • have a good knowledge of British archaeology plus awareness of public sector archaeology
  • excellent IT skills and be confident at using Microsoft Office applications, preferably with experience of MS Access and Geographical Information System software
