Governance Officer

We are looking for an experienced Governance Officer!   An excellent opportunity has arisen to join the small but busy Governance team at Rutland County Council, working alongside elected Councillors and senior officers across all departments to help support the Council’s democratic process.


About the role…

The Governance Officer role is part of a team responsible for providing comprehensive administrative support to the Council’s formal decision making committees. The role also involves providing advice and guidance to elected Members, senior officers and other stakeholders to make sure that the decisions meet the statutory framework.


The Governance Officer will undertake the following main duties:

  • Arranging meetings, briefings and training sessions
  • Preparation and publication of reports, agendas and minutes
  • Attending meetings - both in person and virtual meetings
  • Support for the Planning and Licensing Committee
  • Advising Members, Officers and Members of the Public on the procedural and administrative aspects of the Committee process
  • Management of the Council’s Forward Plan


About you…

  • Highly motivated and an enthusiastic team player with previous governance experience, preferably in supporting regulatory committees
  • Politically astute, confident and with excellent communication skills
  • Well organised with good attention to detail
  • You will have a thorough knowledge of how local government works and be an experienced user
  • Availability to attend evening meetings will be required as will an ability to use video conferencing software such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams
  • Flexible, to be able to work on site or from home as required


Political Restriction…

Under the Local Government and Housing Act 1989, this post is classified as a politically restricted post. Employees who are politically restricted are disqualified from standing for or holding elected office under the Local Government (Political Restrictions) Regulations 1990 (LGO (PR)R 1990) [SI 851].


The Governance Officer interviews will be held week commencing 24 May 2021.
