This Legal Assistant role within the People Services team is a career graded position from Grade 6 to Grade 8.

This is a fantastic opportunity to start a career in the legal profession, working towards a CILEX qualification whilst working in a legal environment. If you would like to work in a range of legal areas commencing in the team providing legal advice in the area of criminal and education law, then this could be the job for you. You will need a flexible approach and excellent organisational skills.

It is a requirement of the role to undertake a formal training programme and the successful candidate will enrol on a Chartered Institute of Legal Executives (CILEX) approved course. You will be able to progress through the grades of the role by successful performance of specific and general work areas, as approved by the Principal Solicitor, and successful completion of the required levels of the CILEX qualification.

We are looking for an aspiring legal professional to join our team as a Legal Assistant. You will be organised with excellent communication and interpersonal skills to be able to provide legal advice, process court proceedings and to attend court as an advocate when required.

In the role you will conduct court cases and other matters. including undertaking advocacy in the Magistrates' Court, communicating with witnesses, solicitors, barristers, court officers and members of the public as required, and making appointments, arranging court hearings and securing witness attendance. You will need to have attention to detail when putting together court papers and be aware of the importance of confidentiality. You will also, provide legal advice to the Council's independent appeals panels. The role will involve moving to work within other teams in Legal Services including civil litigation, child protection, environment and property services.

Above all, you must be a team player able to work under pressure. You will need excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate with people at all levels.

Experience and Skills

Key Skills:

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills in order to effectively exchange complicated or sensitive information both orally and in writing.
  • Confident presentational and advocacy skills in a Court setting.
  • Competence in drafting/report writing.
  • Excellent organisational skills with the ability to work to deadlines.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and to have a flexible and adaptable approach to work.
  • Comprehensive research skills.

  • Evidence of commercial awareness and an understanding of Local Government Law.

Qualifications and/or experience:

  • Demonstrable advocacy skills on routine matters.
  • Experience of competently producing accurate legal documents.
  • Experience of accurately assessing legal issues and understanding the important points.
  • Experience of competently handling a full caseload of varying subjects with minimal supervision and providing robust and professional advice.
