Senior Planning Officer

These are exciting times for planning at Tunbridge Wells Borough Council: we are currently undertaking extensive public consultation on a full Draft Local Plan and are progressing towards preparing the final version of the Plan for submission to the Planning Inspectorate. The Draft Local Plan sets out where development is proposed to be located for the period up until 2038, and includes the delivery of a standalone garden village, and the significant expansion of an existing town, to provide several thousand houses, employment provision and significant infrastructure delivery; all to be delivered on garden community principles.

To support this work a relatively small Strategic Sites and Delivery team has been created in Planning Services. This has responsibility for leading various masterplanning processes, including engagement with the community, and working with landowners, developers, neighbouring authorities and infrastructure providers on the Pre-Submission Local Plan through its examination, and future planning applications.

Tunbridge Wells Borough Council has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Planning Officer (Maternity Cover) within our Strategic Sites and Delivery Team. The post is to cover maternity leave and so is for a temporary period only. This role is key to the overall running of the Service: the postholder will deal with proposals for major development, and other complex proposals of smaller scale development, and play an important role in developing planning policy, including in relation to working with relevant organisations on the preparation of Supplementary Planning Documents.

We are interested in hearing from positive, energetic and conscientious candidates from either a Planning Policy or Development Management background (in either the public or private sector). With considerable town planning experience you will have excellent communication, negotiation and presentation skills; you will work well in a team environment and will be tenacious, thorough, adaptable and will welcome a challenge.

This is an excellent opportunity to broaden your experience and knowledge in a positive, dedicated and friendly service, working in interesting and valued rural and urban environments.

We operate on a positive and “open for business” approach, with good working relationships with elected Members. A key part of this approach is the coordination and joint working between the Strategic Sites and Delivery, Planning Policy and Development Management departments.

Additional benefits for this post include 26 days annual leave, membership of the Local Government Pension Scheme, as well as invaluable training opportunities for continuing professional development.
