Planning Officer

The starting salary for this position is £31,273 per annum based on a 36 hour working week.

Are you looking for an opportunity to build on your planning career?

Surrey County Council’s Planning Service handles planning applications for mineral and waste development and development by the council required for the provision of its services, such as schools.

Minerals are essential for the building and maintenance of homes, commercial and industrial buildings, schools and hospitals as well as transport and utility network improvements. Maintaining the supply of minerals and safeguarding mineral resources from sterilisation is integral in enabling development. Surrey’s mineral resources include sand and gravel, clay, silica sand, chalk, oil and gas.

Over three million tonnes of waste is generated annually in Surrey, which requires increased rates of reuse and recycling as well as major waste management infrastructure to help us deliver sustainable development by driving waste management up the waste hierarchy.
County Council development includes primarily schools, but also care homes, fire stations, and other County driven infrastructure projects.

To help us achieve our goals we have an opportunity for a Planning Officer to join our team. In this role you will manage your own development management case load with a mix of development workload, including site monitoring and enforcement work. You should be self-confident and will value working as part of an experienced and supportive team. You should be able to work under pressure to deadlines, communicate effectively and demonstrate drive and commitment.

To contribute to this key area of work, we are looking for a self-motivated Planner who can work on their own initiative, with new ideas to develop processes that will improve the team’s efficiency and in so doing improve service delivery. In return we will support and develop you to help you reach your own ambitions.

To be shortlisted to interview your CV and personal statement will clearly evidence:

  • A degree in a relevant subject such as planning, geography, environmental science, urban design, sustainability or geology
  • Experience of working in Town Planning, with an understanding of minerals and waste development management issues, County Council own development and the UK planning system
  • Experience in dealing with a range of customer stakeholders
  • A full UK driving licence

At Surrey, our values and behaviours are just as important as our skills and abilities. They shape who we are as an organisation. Find out more about the values we follow.
