Make a difference at the heart of Government

Are you a qualified lawyer, looking for innovative, stimulating and rewarding work? Do you have good legal skills and reliable legal judgement with the ability to think strategically and creatively and see legal issues in their wider context? If so, we’d like you to join our legal teams in London, Manchester or Bristol.

Our work as HMRC lawyers impacts the lives of millions: we help collect the money that pays for the UK’s public services and give targeted financial support. You’ll have a unique opportunity to make the law - through advice and legislation and to contribute to the development of the interpretation of the law, through the major cases we litigate. Our strength is in our diverse people and the inclusive working culture that brings us together.

Our work

Our advisory lawyers advise on the interpretation and application of legislation advising HMRC colleagues and Treasury ministers, working on primary legislation and drafting secondary legislation. Our commercial lawyers advise on high value and complex public procurement and contractual commercial legal issues within government. Our criminal lawyers support HMRC's tax enforcement activity in investigating serious complex fraud and other criminal non-compliance. Our litigation lawyers handle their own caseload, litigating big money tax cases, as well as cases ranging from resisting judicial review challenges to bringing civil cases against those who benefit from the proceeds of crime. Our professional support lawyers will help build our new professional support lawyer team supporting colleagues, by keeping them up to date with legal developments and managing and developing our knowledge management materials.

Our benefits

We want everyone to feel valued, supported and comfortable being their true self at work. We are proud to be a diverse and inclusive employer, supporting social mobility and giving opportunities to people no matter what their background. You’ll join a friendly and helpful community. We’ll give you the support you need to grow in confidence, help you enjoy your time inside and outside the workplace ensuring you have a good work-life balance. We believe that we are a great place to work

You’ll get the benefits that come with working in the Civil Service including an attractive pension package and annual leave allowances.
Who are we looking for?

We’d like you to hear from you whatever your experience and wherever you are in your legal career. We have vacancies for lawyers in all our lawyer roles. You do not need any existing knowledge of our work or tax experience (although we do welcome applications from lawyers who do have experience); we will give you training and support to develop your knowledge and expertise.

Salaries
