The Transport & Network Management Service ensures that our highways are properly managed to ensure residents and businesses can get to where they need to in an efficient way. It also encourages and makes arrangements for residents to use sustainable travel options to make their journeys. Within this service, the Transport Co-ordination Group manage and provide passenger transport solutions arranging for eligible children and others with special requirements to get to and from school using their own fleet of accessible vehicles. They also manage the School Crossing Patrol Service. This West Sussex service operates out of three bases in Chichester, Horsham and Worthing.

About The Job
Salary: £4,086 - £4,167 per annum, pro rata'd, term time only 38 weeks, plus 5.2 weeks annual leave paid (£18,198 - £18,562 per annum, full time equivalent)
Working Pattern: Part time, various hours dependent upon site requirements

We are currently seeking multiple School Crossing Patrols to join our Northern Area Depot.
Staffing one of the 130 Crossing Sites within West Sussex, operated by the Transport Provision Team, as part of the Highways, Transport & Planning Department of West Sussex County Council.
To provide a valuable and reliable service to children and other pedestrians at a designated Crossing Site by assisting them to cross the road safely on their way to and from school.
You will be standing for long periods, holding the 'lollipop' pole in all weather conditions and will exposed to traffic noise and fumes, dirt and dust, and the hazards inherent in stopping cars.
Experience and Skills
You will be a positive role model in your interactions with children and adults using the service.
You will Be familiar with, and adhere to, the values of WSCC and be compliant with key regulations i.e. Health and Safety/Safeguarding, standards and procedures. Be physically able to undertake all the required aspects of the role.
You will be able to work as part of a committed and dynamic team to achieve the shared goal of delivering consistent and outstanding service.
There is a regular and intrinsic requirement to communicate in English with members of the public.
You will be working from detailed written instructions, but will need to make minor decisions e.g. reacting to extreme weather conditions, emergency situations, road works blocking the crossing site, etc.
- Ability to understand and carry out the procedures for safely stopping traffic.
- Good oral communication skills to be able to deal effectively with both children and colleagues, and other adults where necessary.
- Good perception and knowledge of car stopping times, in particular the effect that adverse weather conditions have on these.
- Ability to remain calm when put under pressure by drivers or pedestrians.
- A basic level of literacy and numeracy sufficient to follow detailed written instructions and procedures and record necessary information during the course of the duty e.g. recording car number plates when required.
- To be familiar with the relevant sections of the Highway Code and its applications.
