Full Time

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Strategic Planning Team at Spelthorne Borough Council, which has responsibility for preparing a new Local Plan. Currently at pre-Regulation 19, the Local Plan is at a critical stage and we are looking for an experienced, enthusiastic team player to play a key role in progressing and ultimately adopting the Plan. The team is also responsible for strategic infrastructure projects, cross boundary engagement and other planning policy matters affecting the Borough. This will be a challenging but rewarding position for an existing Senior Planning Officer in a policy role or an ambitious Planning Officer looking to advance their career and broaden their experience.

Spelthorne is located in North Surrey and borders London so we encounter a range of issues such as expansion of Heathrow Airport, high levels of housing need, including affordable housing, pressure to release Green Belt for development, flooding, a broad mix of employment uses and the regeneration of our key town centre, Staines-upon-Thames. The post will involve a diverse range of work including Local Plan preparation and leading on specific topic studies, policy formulation, as well as representing the Council at external meetings. You will be expected to hit the ground running with the ability to make a significant contribution to the new Local Plan and other strategic matters.

The successful candidate will need to have a flexible approach to work and have excellent problem solving and communication skills with a good knowledge of the Local Plan system and relevant legislation.

For more information on this position, please contact Ann Biggs, Strategic Planning Manager on 01784 448619 or email In return we can offer excellent conditions of service with a benefits package that includes flexible working hours, working from home opportunities, pension scheme, free parking and at least 23 days’ paid leave per year.

Closing date:  20 July 2021 12 Noon

Interview: 9 August 2021
